Job Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age
ability to work varied shifts including night, weekends and holidays
able to perform friendly and courteous relations with customers and coworkers
effective communication skills including hearing and speech
ability to complete written forms
conduct visual inspections and read product information
lift and maneuver objects up to 20 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally
stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently
manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination
memorize PLU codes, product locations, check stand procedures and company policies
ensure accuracy in scanning and handling monetary transactions with mental alertness and basic math skills
occasionally use blades for box cutting
use household cleaners to maintain work area
navigate and manage high stress, volatile, or unsatisfied customers and a high volume of transactions
comply with state and local laws regarding food safety handlers cards and tobacco and alcohol sales certification as applicable

Job Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent preferred
prior customer service experience is a plus but not required
ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members
basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
manual dexterity and good hand eye coordination
ability to memorize and learn substantial product and policy information
ability to operate check stand technology such as cash registers, scanners and scales
ability to handle cash and other monetary transactions accurately
strong customer service orientation
adaptability to a fast-paced retail environment
ability to manage potentially high stress situations with composure

Job Duties

Seek opportunities to welcome, engage, serve and thank customers
maintain an atmosphere of friendly, enthusiastic customer service
operate check stand equipment such as cash register, scanner and scale to process customer orders
engage in suggestive selling and other sales techniques
process monetary transactions including cash, checks, gift certificates, food stamps, coupons, and refunds
maintain knowledge of current product location, monitor UPC codes and ensure proper pricing
maintain clean, neat and properly stocked check stand and ensure safe and secure work area
stock, price and rotate merchandise
may be assigned to multi station self-checkout lane or customer service counter as needed
perform other duties as assigned
follow all state and federal laws concerning the sale of restricted or regulated items including tobacco and alcohol
adhere to USDA Food Stamp or WIC voucher procedures
regularly monitor SCO area to expedite transactions and maintain safety
engage with customers at SCO stations to assist in transactions and reduce errors
monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payment accuracy
prioritize safety of employees and customers by addressing or reporting concerns
