Job Description
From humble beginnings as a single grocery store in Cincinnati more than a century ago, Kroger has grown into the nation’s largest grocer, operating nearly 2,800 stores across 35 states under 28 different names. As America’s grocer, Kroger prides itself on its diverse teams who share a passion for food and people, united by one common purpose: To Feed the Human Spirit. With a long history of innovation, Kroger works tirelessly to craft amazing experiences not only for its customers but also for communities and employees alike, with food being at the heart of every endeavor.
Kroger is committed to creating a workplace where people matter. The company values respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety, making these core principles the foundation of every interaction and decision. With comprehensive benefits designed to support the physical, emotional, and financial well-being of every associate, Kroger invests deeply in the growth and success of its team members. From flexible scheduling and paid time off to tuition reimbursement and valuable associates’ discounts, Kroger strives to provide the ingredients for employees to build their own recipe for success both at work and in life. Whether you are seeking part-time opportunities or a full-fledged career path, Kroger offers an environment where your potential is unlimited.
The role of a Cashier/Checker at Kroger is vital to the overall customer experience. This position is all about delivering outstanding customer service — being visible, greeting customers warmly, assisting them efficiently, and creating a welcoming environment. As a Cashier/Checker, you will be responsible for processing customer transactions quickly and accurately using Kroger’s Point of Sale (POS) system, handling various payment types such as cash, checks, credit/debit cards, SNAP EBT, and coupons in accordance with company policy. The role also requires a solid understanding of checkout procedures and adherence to guidelines on restricted sales items like alcohol and tobacco.
Beyond transactions, the Cashier/Checker plays an important role in loss prevention by managing cash shortages or overages effectively, reporting pricing discrepancies, and following established company policies. The position is customer-focused, requiring an associate who can answer questions about products, reinforce food safety regulations, and promote a safe environment by identifying and reporting unsafe conditions or equipment in need of repair. In addition, cashiers need to stay updated on store ads and promotions to provide accurate information to customers. This job demands effective communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and a positive attitude to foster loyalty and repeat visits from customers.
Joining Kroger means becoming part of a company that values your well-being and growth. With access to comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, emotional and financial support through counseling and coaching, as well as training and development opportunities, each associate is empowered to thrive. Kroger offers up to $21,000 in tuition reimbursement through its industry-leading continuing education program and supports diverse career pathways for advancement. If you are caring, purpose-driven, and hungry to learn, Kroger is ready to provide you with a fresh opportunity to grow and succeed.
