The Bakery Decorator role at Whole Foods Market entails a highly creative and skilled position that impacts not only product quality but also customer experience. The Bakery Decorator is responsible for assembling, filling, and artistically decorating cakes, tarts, pastries, and custom special-order bakery items. This role requires an in-depth knowledge of various icing techniques for products like Swiss Buttercream, American Buttercream, Ganache, Cream Cheese Icing, and multiple types of meringue. The decorator applies intermediate to advanced cake-decorating skills, including piping, flower making, and color theory, to create visually stunning and delicious bakery goods that align with the company’s quality and presentation standards.
In addition to crafting beautiful bakery products, the decorator supports the store's operational goals by managing product displays, monitoring product freshness, performing opening and closing duties, and maintaining a clean and sanitary workspace following FDA-approved protocols. The role also involves collaborating with Bakery Decorator Apprentices and other team members to foster skill growth and teamwork. Customer service excellence is critical, involving prompt and courteous communication, modeling suggestive selling techniques, and responding to customer inquiries to enhance the overall shopping experience. This is a physically engaging job requiring the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, and work under varying temperature conditions. Job Requirements
- Minimum 6 months retail or restaurant experience
- Completion of Bakery Decorator Apprentice training program or equivalent
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to stand and walk 6-8 hours per day
- Ability to perform single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling
- Ability to bend, twist, squat, and reach
- Exposure to FDA approved cleaning chemicals
- Exposure to temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit
- Ability to work in wet and dry conditions
- Ability to work flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to use tools and equipment such as knives, box cutters, electric pallet jacks and heavy machinery
- May require use of ladders
Job Qualifications
- Minimum of 6-12 months retail or restaurant experience
- Completion of the Bakery Decorator Apprentice training program or equivalent experience
- Prior experience within a professional bakery or grocery retail, preferred
- Proficient cake and pastry decorating skills, including intermediate piping techniques and flower making
- Understanding of color theory as it pertains to blending buttercream colors and coordinating palettes
- Knowledge of various icings such as Swiss Buttercream, American Buttercream, Ganache, Cream Cheese Icing, Whipped Cream, Chantilly, and different varieties of meringue
- Ability to follow recipes, directions, and procedures
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Advanced knife handling, tool, and equipment safety
- Basic math skills for recipe conversions and modifications
- Strong communication skills and teamwork
- Customer service excellence with the ability to address customer needs
- Strong work ethic and ability to work in a fast-paced environment with urgency
Job Duties
- Assemble, fill, and finish/decorate cakes, tarts, select pastry, and special-order bakery items
- Build, ice, and decorate cakes and other bakery items following standard procedures to meet business demand
- Complete production and spoilage records according to standard procedures, adjusting production sheets to maintain sufficient product
- Prioritize production lists and recommend adjustments as needed
- Merchandise and showcase products in the sales display case to satisfy and delight customers
- Monitor product quality for freshness and ensure proper product rotation within the display case, following standard procedures
- Provide guidance and support for Bakery Decorator Apprentices and other Team Members
