Job Description
The hiring organization operates a school-based Child Nutrition Program that focuses on delivering high-quality cafeteria services to students and faculty within the school system. This establishment is dedicated to maintaining optimal nutrition standards and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to child nutrition. The organization values safety, food quality, customer service, and efficient cafeteria operations, and strives to create a positive dining experience for students while supporting the educational environment. They provide employment opportunities with roles that directly influence the well-being and satisfaction of students during meal service periods. This position is typically full-time and includes responsibilities that require supervisory and management expertise within a school cafeteria setting. Competitive compensation is offered based on experience and qualifications.
The role of the Cafeteria Manager is fundamental in overseeing daily operations in a specific school-based cafeteria. This position involves directly managing between 3 to 15 employees, which include Food Technicians, Clerks, and Volunteers, to ensure that all activities comply with organizational policies and applicable laws. The manager is responsible for the human resources aspects of the cafeteria staff, including approving time records, leave requests, conducting employee orientation, training, and performance evaluations such as 30, 60, and 90-day evaluations for new hires and annual evaluations for all employees. The manager develops and implements work schedules, menus, inventory reports, and cleaning schedules while communicating any additional directions to staff members.
Operational duties involve ensuring proper food preparation practices including planning food quantities, issuing ingredients, modifying recipes as needed to maintain food quality, and coordinating the serving lines. Maintaining accurate perpetual inventory records and safeguarding food supplies and equipment from theft or damage is a critical component of the job. The manager is also responsible for bi-weekly ordering of food and supplies, receiving and verifying deliveries, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and sanitation standards. The position calls for maintaining various reports to document food usage, participation, inventory adjustments, and temperature logs in compliance with auditing requirements.
This role requires interaction and communication with students, parents, school administrators, vendors, and central office personnel to address concerns related to food service and to keep all parties informed about account balances and cafeteria operations. The manager is entrusted with handling daily monetary transactions, securing funds, and preparing deposits according to auditing guidelines. Furthermore, the Cafeteria Manager must ensure the safety of the workspace by enforcing safety rules, correcting hazards, and reporting incidents including workers’ compensation claims.
The physical demands of this position include regular moving, lifting, standing, and handling kitchen equipment and food items, with exposure to heat, mechanical parts, and potentially hazardous chemicals. Mental functions include effective communication, coordination, instruction, evaluation, and decision-making to maintain food quality and operational efficiency. The manager is expected to foster a harmonious work environment, perform errands, and operate company vehicles when required. Overall, this role is essential in managing and maintaining an efficient, safe, and compliant cafeteria environment that supports the health and nutrition needs of the school community.
