Job Description
The Office of Operations (OoO) within the DC Public Schools (DCPS) system is a comprehensive administrative and operational body that manages a broad spectrum of functions essential to the smooth running and support of all 117 schools within the district. The office is key to ensuring that principals, teachers, students, and central service teams have all necessary operational systems, facilities, and support to foster an environment conducive to excellence in education. OoO is subdivided into multiple divisions that cover various aspects such as Strategic School Operations, Food and Nutrition Services, School Security, and Facilities Planning and Design, each tasked with specialized roles that collectively underpin the efficacy and safety of the DCPS educational environment.
The Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) division is a vital component of OoO recognized for delivering healthy, innovative school food initiatives. Extending beyond mere meal provision, FNS incorporates nutrition-related activities including but not limited to school gardens, a farm-to-school program, and environmental sustainability efforts within cafeteria operations. This division consists of teams specializing in finance, strategy and data, nutrition compliance, partnerships, and food service operations, all unified by the mission to provide wholesome and delicious meals that promote long-term wellness, prepare students for learning, and enhance their satisfaction within the school setting.
The role of Cafeteria Lead within the Food and Nutrition Services division is pivotal in ensuring operational success and compliance at the school level. The Cafeteria Lead is responsible for supervising and directing all food service operations at an assigned school, ensuring that meals meet mandated nutritional requirements and are served efficiently and safely. The position demands hands-on leadership, involving directing staff and volunteers, managing the kitchen environment, maintaining sanitary conditions, and balancing daily production records. The Cafeteria Lead also handles ordering supplies, inventory management, overseeing the cooking process, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
This role requires a candidate who can adapt to school-specific assignments and may be asked to rotate between schools within the same cluster due to staffing needs. It is a safety-sensitive position that includes rigorous background and health screenings, reflecting the importance of maintaining a secure and trustworthy environment for students and staff.
Compensation for the Cafeteria Lead position is set at $19.06 per year, with assignments typically designated by the Food and Nutrition Services Field Supervisor. The ideal candidate possesses a high school diploma or GED along with one to three years of relevant experience, preferably with exposure to the education sector. Key skills include strong food preparation knowledge, ability to follow instructions accurately, customer service excellence, and a current sanitation certification such as ServSafe. Moreover, certification from the DC Department of Health is mandatory and must be maintained throughout employment.
This role within DCPS embodies core values such as Students First, Courage, Equity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Joy, emphasizing an inclusive and accessible workplace. The district is committed to equal employment opportunities, encouraging applications from individuals with disabilities and providing necessary accommodations throughout the hiring process. The Cafeteria Lead position thus represents a vital frontline role that supports the education system's mission by promoting healthy nutrition and a thriving school culture.
