Job Description

This position is a Classified Substitute role within various school sites, responsible for performing service-level duties related to food preparation, serving, and kitchen sanitation. The employing entity is a public school district that prioritizes nutritious food service as a critical part of supporting student health and well-being. This Classified Substitute position offers an hourly rate of $18.13, with hours varying based on site needs and schedules. As a Classified Substitute, the individual will support the food preparation team by preparing, assembling, slicing, and serving various food items, including fruits, vegetables, frozen goods, and cooked ingredients. This role also involves the careful arrangement of cafeteria service lines, helping students make food selections with ease and delivering meals to classrooms when necessary. Equipment operation skills are vital, as the substitute assists with commercial kitchen machinery such as food processors, mixers, slicing machines, dishwashers, and warming ovens. This role demands adherence to food safety protocols, including accurate recording of food temperatures and proper handling procedures to ensure compliance with Health Department regulations.

The substitute also plays a part in inventory management, receiving and inspecting food deliveries, rotating stock to maintain freshness, and preparing special event meals such as for field trips. Cleanliness and sanitation are key responsibilities, requiring the washing and sanitizing of kitchen and service areas. There's potential to serve as a point-of-sale cashier, processing payments, and assisting in daily receipt compilation. The individual collaborates with custodial and maintenance staff to maintain optimal kitchen operations and attends required district meetings and trainings. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in large quantity food preparation preferred
  • Ability to perform routine duties under direct supervision
  • Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to add and subtract using decimals and fractions
  • Ability to work varying shifts and locations
  • Must obtain ServSafe certification
  • Must pass approved pre-placement medical assessment
  • Must submit to background check including fingerprinting
  • Must provide resume and proof of education

Job Duties

  • Prepares, assembles, counts, slices, cuts or otherwise portions food items such as fruits, vegetables, frozen and cooked ingredients
  • Assists in delivering meals to classrooms

  • Serves food items according to specified portions and menus
  • Operates kitchen equipment including food processors, mixers, slicing machines, dishwashers and warming ovens
  • Assists in cooking, baking and preparing meat and bread products
  • Handles receiving, inspecting, storing and rotating inventory
  • Prepares food for field trips and special events
  • Records food temperatures during preparation
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen equipment and surfaces
  • Serves as a point-of-sale cashier when needed
  • Collaborates with custodial and maintenance staff for kitchen efficiency
