Job Description
The Office of Operations within the DC Public Schools (DCPS) system plays a vital role in ensuring the strategic management and smooth functioning of all the operational facets that contribute to the daily success of 118 schools across the district. This office is comprised of several key divisions, namely Strategic School Operations, Food and Nutrition Services, School Security, and Facilities. Collectively, these divisions support principals, teachers, students, and central services teams by providing the necessary operational systems, facilities, and assistance that foster an excellent educational environment.
A prominent and much-valued component of the Office of Operations is the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) division. This division is widely recognized for providing healthy, innovative, and nutritious school meals that go far beyond basic food service. The DCPS FNS is actively involved in a variety of nutrition-related programs like school gardens, farm-to-school initiatives, and environmental sustainability and stewardship practices that enhance cafeteria operations. Its mission is clear and impactful: to ensure that all DCPS students are engaged with and have access to wholesome and delicious meals that promote long-term wellness, support their readiness to learn, and enhance their satisfaction with meals at school.
The Food Service Worker (FSW), Cafeteria, is an essential member of this mission-driven team. The FSW is responsible for preparing, cooking, heating, baking, and serving a diverse array of foods from fresh, canned, dry, or frozen forms according to standardized recipes. This role involves assisting in the efficient production and serving of nutritious meals, fostering a positive service culture, and ensuring compliance with USDA nutritional standards and health regulations. Working under the supervision of the Cafeteria Lead, the FSW ensures that food storage areas meet strict safety standards while actively participating in food waste management and inventory controls.
This position is full time and carries a salary range between $17.94 and $21.45 per hour. It also requires flexibility as Food Service Workers may be assigned to specific schools or rotate within clusters based on District scheduling and staffing needs. Moreover, given the safety-sensitive nature of the role, employees are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing protocols throughout their tenure.
The FSW contributes not only to meal preparation but also to maintaining sanitary conditions by cleaning equipment and food preparation areas, operating kitchen appliances such as mixers, slicers, ovens, and warmers, and using various kitchenware tools to ensure food quality and safety. The role demands good communication skills as the FSW may need to respond to inquiries from students, staff, and the larger school community regarding meal options and costs. As the frontline representatives during meal periods, Food Service Workers help create an environment that supports the nutritional needs and positive experiences of DCPS students.
This opportunity emphasizes the values held by DCPS: Students First, Courage, Equity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Joy. The District is committed to inclusive hiring and welcomes applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including those with disabilities. The commitment to achieving equitable educational outcomes reflects strongly in the supportive and collaborative work environment fostered within the Food and Nutrition Services division and across the entire Office of Operations, making the Food Service Worker a significant part of the educational community’s success and well-being.
