The position of Cafe Worker at Valley Medical Center is a full-time role, based at the VMC Main Campus in Renton, WA, with night shifts comprising a 40-hour workweek. This role is pivotal in maintaining high levels of guest satisfaction by ensuring smooth and efficient retail food service operations. The salary range for this position is competitive, with a minimum of $22.65 to a maximum of $34.86 hourly, depending on experience. The Cafe Worker is responsible for a variety of tasks such as interacting with customers, taking food orders, serving food and beverages, replenishing supplies, and managing cash transactions accurately.

This position demands a professional attitude and a high level of customer service skills to ensure every guest’s needs are met promptly and accurately. The role also involves the preparation of quality beverages, including specialty coffee drinks like lattes and cappuccinos, and the maintenance of clean and sanitary work areas in compliance with health regulations. The Cafe Worker reports directly to the Retail Manager and operates within the Food Management and Nutrition Services Department. The role requires effective communication skills, the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and flexibility in working hours, including weekends and holidays. Candidates are expected to possess a Washington State Food Handler's permit and have basic experience in food service, cash handling, and barista duties. The job includes physical demands such as lifting, bending, and transporting food service supplies and working on feet for extended periods.

Job Requirements

  • Must have current Washington State Food Handler's permit
  • high school diploma or GED certification preferred
  • able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • able to work on weekends and holidays
  • able to meet professional appearance standards of the organization
  • one to two years of food service experience preferred
  • prior experience working as a Barista preferred
  • one year of experience in cash handling including tending cash and balancing cash drawer preferred

Job Duties

  • Interact with customers to obtain food orders
  • serve foods
  • replenish supplies and foods at serving stations
  • produce quality beverages such as lattes and espresso drinks
  • use cash registers or calculators to prepare bill totals for food
  • accept payment and make correct change
  • set up, break down, clean and sanitize all assigned work areas
  • maintain a safe and sanitary work environment
  • portion food accurately according to department standards
  • maintain temperature records
  • generate end of shift cash report with proper reconciliation
  • communicate customer feedback to appropriate persons
  • participate in training of new team members
  • assist in day-to-day operations including relief coverage
  • cooperate and actively participate in flexing hours during low census
