Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a beloved bookstore chain that serves as a vibrant gathering place for readers and the local community alike. Known for its extensive collection of books, the welcoming ambiance, and a unique combination of retail and cafe experience, Barnes & Noble stores have become destinations where customers can indulge both their love for reading and enjoyment of quality cafe offerings. As a company, Barnes & Noble is committed to creating engaging environments that foster community connection and cultural enrichment, supported by an experienced team dedicated to excellent customer service and operational excellence.
The Cafe Team Expert (CTE) role at Barnes & Noble is an integral leadership position within the cafe team, designed for those passionate about both hospitality and retail management. The CTE leads the cafe team by developing their skills and knowledge to ensure a welcoming and efficient environment for customers. This role goes beyond basic supervision; it involves using data and operational insights to impact sales, monitor trends, manage inventory and waste, and ensure the cafe operates profitably. As a key business leader, the Cafe Team Expert works closely with the Store Manager to craft and implement strategic cafe action plans that align with overall store objectives and deliver measurable results.
Being a Cafe Team Expert is about displaying core behaviors that set high standards across the team and store. These include maintaining reliable attendance, demonstrating a positive and proactive work ethic, supporting and encouraging other team members with kindness and fairness, and consistently delivering excellent customer service with enthusiasm and cheerfulness. The CTE embodies leadership by example and fosters a culture of continuous learning and active listening, ensuring clear communication around company goals and initiatives.
Operationally, the Cafe Team Expert is expected to master the core competencies of a Barnes & Noble Barista. This includes proficient drink-making skills, maintaining food and beverage presentation standards, running the register efficiently, and assisting the bookselling team when required. The role includes coaching and mentoring team members in all cafe and safety procedures, managing inventory control accurately, and maintaining loss prevention standards. The cafe environment demands physical stamina as duties require prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking. Flexibility to support multiple store locations within the cluster is also valued.
As the Cafe Team Expert gains experience, the level of responsibility and influence increases. The role evolves to include making expert food and beverage recommendations, analyzing sales and waste data to optimize profitability, conducting regular meetings with the Store Manager to review performance and training, and ensuring rigorous adherence to safety and sanitation guidelines. The CTE role is designed to grow alongside the individual, offering development opportunities that expand expertise and leadership impact both within the cafe and across the wider cluster of stores.
Overall, Barnes & Noble welcomes baristas who not only enjoy their craft but also thrive in a dynamic retail and hospitality environment. The company supports its part-time and full-time employees with a comprehensive benefits package tailored to hours worked. Starting benefits include employee discounts and sick pay for part-time associates, gradually expanding to paid time off, parental leave, company-paid holidays, 401(k) matching, and a full range of health benefits for those working 30+ hours per week. Barnes & Noble is committed to providing a supportive workplace where baristas grow professionally and contribute meaningfully to the bookstore experience.
