Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a nationally recognized bookstore company that serves as a vital community hub where readers and book enthusiasts come together to explore a wide range of books, media, and related products. Beyond its extensive bookselling operations, Barnes & Noble enriches the customer experience through its integrated cafés which offer quality food and beverages in a welcoming environment. As an established leader in book retailing and community engagement, Barnes & Noble emphasizes an inclusive and positive workplace culture. It is committed to diversity, providing equal opportunity, and fostering a safe and respectful environment for all employees and customers alike.

The Café Team Expert (CTE) role at Barnes & Noble is a pivotal leadership position within the Café team, tasked with driving operational excellence and enhancing customer satisfaction. A CTE leads by example, mentoring and coaching the café team to develop a deeper knowledge of their products and services, and to cultivate an inviting atmosphere for guests. This role requires a strong balance of data-driven decision-making, practical leadership skills, and a genuine passion for hospitality. The CTE collaborates closely with the Store Manager to implement strategic plans aimed at maximizing café sales, managing inventory efficiently, and minimizing waste, all of which contribute to maintaining a profitable and thriving café operation.

Beyond routine leadership duties, the Café Team Expert is expected to embody and promote key behavioral standards such as reliability, a positive attitude, adaptability to scheduling needs, teamwork, customer service excellence, and proactive personal development. Mastery of café operational competencies is essential, including advanced skills in drink making, food and beverage presentation, merchandising, order processing, and barista expertise. The role also involves supporting broader store functions during slower café periods and upholding all safety, hygiene, and sanitation protocols to ensure a clean and secure environment.

In this fast-paced and physical role, which involves prolonged standing and active engagement across the store, the Café Team Expert continuously grows in their ability to analyze sales data, assess inventory, and participate in strategic meetings to optimize operational outcomes. As experience develops, so does the opportunity to act as a trusted advisor and coach for the wider store cluster, helping to drive overall success in both café and bookstore domains. Working at Barnes & Noble means joining a vibrant team of dedicated professionals who share a love of books, community, and outstanding guest service. Comprehensive benefits and a supportive culture make this an attractive opportunity for individuals seeking dynamic retail leadership experience with a renowned brand.
