Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookseller known for being more than just a bookstore. It serves as a vibrant community hub where readers and enthusiasts gather to explore a wide array of books and enjoy a welcoming environment. Barnes & Noble bookstores are designed to create an inspiring atmosphere that combines a love for literature with a comfortable space to relax and connect with others. The company prides itself on offering not only books but also an inviting café experience that enriches the overall customer journey. As a committed leader in the retail bookstore industry, Barnes & Noble continually seeks passionate team members who are enthusiastic about creating memorable customer experiences and maintaining operational excellence.

Within this unique setting, the role of Café Team Expert (CTE) is integral to the success of the café operation inside the bookstore. The Café Team Expert acts as a key leader, guiding the café team to deliver an exceptional dining experience and maintain a warm, friendly atmosphere. This position requires a balance of leadership, operational proficiency, customer service, and business acumen. The CTE is responsible for developing the team's skills and knowledge to foster a positive work environment and consistently exceed customer expectations.

The Café Team Expert is tasked with leveraging data analysis to influence decisions related to sales, inventory management, waste reduction, and overall profitability. This role works closely with the Store Manager to formulate and implement effective business strategies designed to optimize café operations. Attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving are essential. The CTE must be adaptable, flexible, and capable of leading by example, setting high standards for attendance, punctuality, and teamwork.

In addition to leadership responsibilities, the Café Team Expert is expected to master all aspects of the Barnes & Noble barista role. This includes proficiency in crafting high-quality beverages, maintaining food presentation standards, and managing inventory accurately. Training is provided to ensure that the CTE and their team meet or exceed company standards for safety, hygiene, and customer service. The position is physically demanding and involves activities such as prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and frequent walking.

The CTE role is also dynamic, offering opportunities for career growth and skill refinement. Experienced Café Team Experts contribute more broadly by supporting the larger store cluster and mentoring other team members. They utilize retail and café knowledge to make informed recommendations, analyze sales data to drive profitability, and uphold all health and safety regulations.

Barnes & Noble embraces diversity and is committed to providing equal employment opportunity in a respectful and inclusive environment. They encourage applicants who bring dedication, enthusiasm, and a passion for delivering excellent customer experiences to consider joining their team as a Café Team Expert. This role not only demands technical café expertise but also a genuine enjoyment of being a barista, combined with leadership qualities that inspire and motivate others to thrive within the vibrant community that Barnes & Noble fosters.
