Job Description

James River Church is a vibrant faith-based community dedicated to serving and uplifting its congregation and visitors alike. With a strong foundation rooted in Christian values, the church strives to create an inviting and supportive environment for everyone who walks through its doors. Its various ministries and facilities work collectively to propagate the gospel message and foster spiritual growth among its members. One of the key elements enhancing the church experience is the James River Church Cafés, which serve as communal spaces where people can gather, enjoy refreshments, and build relationships. These cafés are integral to the church’s mission, offering a welcoming atmosphere through exceptional service and quality products. The Café Lead position at James River Church plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operations of the café, aligning it with the church’s high standards and guiding principles. Working closely with the Café Manager, the Café Lead is entrusted with implementing procedures, overseeing daily operations, and leading the café team. This leadership role requires a person who embodies the core values of the church—joy, enthusiasm, encouragement, love, care, and a servant-minded attitude—while demonstrating professionalism and operational expertise. The Café Lead is responsible not only for the preparation and sale of café products but also for maintaining customer relations and leveraging catering opportunities to support the church’s events and gatherings. This means the Café Lead must ensure the café is always well-stocked, clean, and operating safely, and that staff members receive proper training and guidance. The role involves hands-on tasks such as operating espresso and brewing machines, baking, product preparation, and handling monetary transactions. Beyond these duties, the Café Lead assists with recruiting and training new team members, updating operational manuals, conducting inventory checks, placing orders, and reporting issues or praises to the Café Manager. This position follows a specific work schedule primarily focused on Sundays and Wednesday evenings, providing flexible yet structured hours of engagement. Candidates for this role must have a high school diploma or equivalent, a calling to support ministry projects, and the physical ability to perform café duties, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 30 pounds. Additionally, the Café Lead will need to obtain Food Handlers or ServSafe Certification within the first 60 days of employment, reflecting the church’s commitment to health and safety standards. The role transcends operational responsibilities; it embraces a deeper calling to uphold the spiritual and ethical standards of James River Church. Staff members are expected to live by a code of conduct grounded in biblical teachings, which includes maintaining a strong personal walk with the Lord, fostering healthy family relationships, managing personal finances responsibly, attending church services regularly, and promoting unity and integrity within the church community. The Café Lead is not just a manager of tasks but a leader who inspires their team through a genuine demonstration of faith, enthusiasm, and servant leadership. Through joy, enthusiasm, encouragement, love, care, and a servant-minded approach, the Café Lead at James River Church is fundamental to creating a positive and uplifting environment for both team members and guests. This role offers a unique opportunity to blend operational management with spiritual ministry, making a meaningful impact on the church community while supporting the café’s mission to provide excellent service and nurture fellowship.
