With over 85 years of experience, the company specializes in design, planning, architectural, environmental, construction, and program management services. Headquartered in Pittsburgh and operating from over 100 offices nationwide, Michael Baker International supports a wide range of projects including roads, bridges, tunnels, mass transit, airports, water treatment plants, and specialized overseas construction. The firm is recognized for its commitment to creating safer, more accessible, and sustainable communities through visionary leadership and transformative change.
Michael Baker International’s Bridge Practice particularly stands out as a leader in addressing bridge design, construction, and preservation challenges. Ranked number seven by Engineering News-Record among bridge design firms in the United States, the Bridge Practice covers an extensive spectrum of bridge types—from conventional grade separations to complex river crossings including trusses, arches, box girders, and cable-stayed bridges. The bridge teams collaborate nationwide to design and build innovative structures that serve as vital transportation links for millions of people daily.
The Bridge Intern role at Michael Baker International offers valuable hands-on experience and training opportunities in the engineering field. This internship is available in the Allentown, Fort Washington, and Philadelphia, PA offices. Interns will work closely under the guidance of Project Engineers or Project Managers to develop engineering plans, prepare technical specifications, and produce cost estimates. The position offers a chance to gain practical knowledge of both the design and construction phases of bridge projects. Interns may also assist Construction Managers on-site by documenting inspection activities, resolving field issues, and ensuring adherence to project plans and specifications.
This internship provides a unique platform for students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related fields with a focus on Structural Engineering. Interns will engage in tasks such as preparing highway, traffic, bike/pedestrian, stormwater management, and other roadway plans, alongside structural bridge planning. They will receive mentorship from senior engineers and become part of a multidisciplinary design team, enriching their learning experience.
Michael Baker International values excellent communication skills and proficiency in design and documentation software such as AutoCAD or MicroStation. The estimated compensation for this internship ranges from $20 to $25 per hour, contingent on individual qualifications and experience. The company is committed to equitable employment practices, maintaining a drug-free workplace, and fostering a diverse, inclusive work environment.
