The Breakfast/Line Cook position at MorningStar Senior Living is a part-time opportunity designed for individuals who are passionate about food preparation and eager to contribute to the well-being of senior residents. This role offers a competitive pay range between $18.00 and $20.00 per hour, applicable for non-exempt employees. Working predominantly on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M., this position plays a crucial part in preparing nutritious, balanced, and attractive meals that meet the dietary needs and preferences of residents. As a cook, your responsibilities will extend beyond simple food preparation to include seasoning, cooking, and serving meals that are appealing and appetizing.
This position requires individuals who understand the importance of food safety and proper handling techniques, ensuring all meals comply with federal and state regulations and company policies. The Breakfast/Line Cook will prepare a variety of dishes including meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, fruits, soups, salads, desserts, breads, and pastries based on the prescribed menus and schedules. Beyond cooking, this role demands precision in portion control, an awareness of dietary requirements, and the ability to work independently while following standard recipes.
Candidates for this position are expected to have a high school diploma or equivalent along with some culinary experience, preferably in a healthcare dietary setting. Knowledge of cooking times, food safety regulations, and special diet considerations will be highly valued. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to read and write English
- Previous experience working in a dietary department of a health care facility preferred
- Knowledge of food preparation and cooking techniques
- Ability to comply with federal and state food safety regulations
- Ability to work weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from 6:00 A.M. to 2:30 P.M.
- Physical ability to handle food preparation tasks and stand for extended periods
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma preferred but at minimum the ability to read and write English
- Previous experience in the dietary department of health care facility preferred
- Ability to prepare and cook a variety of foods in large quantities
- Awareness of special diets, seasoning requirements, cooking times and temperature controls
- Ability to estimate quantities of food required, limit waste and utilize leftovers
- Demonstration of core values including love, kindness, honesty, goodness, fairness, and respect
Job Duties
- Handle and prepare food that is palatable, appetizing, and attractive
- Comply with meal schedules
- Follow standard recipes, but make independent decisions in line with current experience
- Understand importance of proper food-handling techniques and hazards of improper food handling
- Be familiar with seasoning and cooking time required
- Be aware of cooking characteristics of various cuts of meats, fish and fowl
- Estimate quantities of food required and apportion servings while monitoring portion controlled guidelines for individual residents
- Prepare foodstuffs for cooking: peel, wash, trim, and cut vegetables and fruit
- wash, cut, de-bone and trim meat, fish and fowl
- Taste, smell, and observe food to ensure conformity with recipes and appearance
- Serve food according to dietary guidelines, checking each tray for completeness and accuracy
- Cook food: bake, roast, stew and steam-cook meats, fish and fowl, basting as necessary to retain flavor
- Make gravies, stocks, dressings, sauces and soups
- Prepare cold meats, sandwiches, griddle cakes, cooked cereals, and beverages
