Job Description

The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is a vital federal law enforcement agency tasked with protecting America’s borders and ensuring the security of the nation. Operating under the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, USBP plays a critical role in deterring illegal immigration, preventing human trafficking, drug smuggling, and other illicit activities at or near the nation’s borders. The agency boasts a workforce of over 60,000 dedicated professionals who work tirelessly in some of the most challenging environments to maintain national security and promote economic prosperity. The USBP is committed to building a team of elite law enforcement agents characterized by their camaraderie, professionalism, and unwavering sense of purpose. USBP offers full-time, entry-level, career positions with a clear pathway for advancement through various grade levels starting from GL-5 through GS-12. The positions come with competitive salaries, generous federal benefits, and substantial new-hire sign-on and retention incentives totaling up to $60,000 for qualifying candidates. The initial annual base salary ranges from $51,632 to $92,912, varying by grade level and locality pay, which can add up to 25% depending on duty location. New recruits will receive intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. This approximately six-month program equips recruits with comprehensive instruction on immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement protocols, tactical driving, physical techniques, firearms proficiency, and USBP-specific operations. Spanish language training is also part of the curriculum to ensure agents are linguistically prepared, reflecting the bilingual nature of border enforcement duties. Upon graduation, agents are assigned to one of many mission-critical stations including but not limited to the Southwest Border sectors and other strategic points nationwide. Assignments often require relocation, dictated by operational needs, and include locations in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, and various northern border sectors. Positions involve physically demanding work patrolling international boundaries and waterways using a diverse array of assets such as vehicles, horses, boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles to detect and apprehend individuals violating customs and immigration laws. Being a Border Patrol Agent means joining a respected federal law enforcement family committed to a mission worthy of a career—not just a job.
