Job Description

The Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Community Programs Branch (N92) under the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Recreational Fleet and Family Readiness Support Services (N94) operates within the Commander, Navy Region Hawaii, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JPHH), Honolulu, Hawaii. This branch is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and well-being of military personnel, their families, and authorized patrons through a comprehensive range of recreational and community support programs. The Kona Winds Complex is a key facility within this community recreation program, serving as a venue to foster morale, social interaction, and leisure activities for the Navy community. The MWR programs are critical in providing enriching experiences that promote physical fitness, mental well-being, community bonding, and family support, enabling service members and their families to maintain a balanced lifestyle amidst the demands of military life.

This position is specifically focused on delivering excellent customer service to patrons and supporting the diverse activities within the MWR community recreation program at the Kona Winds Complex. The role primarily involves operating a modestly stocked bar serving a limited variety of beverages, including certain liquors, soda, beer, wine, and pre-mixed drinks such as daiquiris, while ensuring adherence to responsible alcohol service practices. The bartender must accurately prepare beverages according to standard recipes and meet patrons' requested drink orders. An essential responsibility of this role is to monitor patron behavior, recognize signs of intoxication or disorderly conduct, and take appropriate action or seek assistance to maintain a safe and welcoming environment. The bartender will also handle monetary transactions, including collecting tabs or chits, and reconciling these with what has been served.

The role requires standing or walking for prolonged periods and handling items of varying weights, occasionally up to 40 pounds. Working conditions are generally indoors with adequate lighting, heating, and ventilation, though exposure to minor physical wear such as chapped hands or bruises is possible due to the nature of the job. This position requires excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written, and the ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with patrons and team members. Candidates must be at least 21 years old to comply with legal regulations regarding alcohol service. Additionally, the successful applicant must satisfy Federal employment suitability requirements, including passing a background investigation involving fingerprint identification and completion of inquiry forms.

This is an 'Other' employment type position within the Navy's community services framework, designed to support the well-being and recreation of the Navy community through attentive service and community engagement. The job offers opportunities to work within a structured program that values teamwork, customer service, and community support, contributing directly to the morale and welfare of Navy personnel and their families. Individuals who enjoy dynamic customer-facing roles within a supportive environment and who are committed to safety and customer satisfaction will find this position rewarding and impactful.
