Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookseller and community gathering place that combines a love of books with a vibrant cafe environment, making it a unique destination for readers and coffee enthusiasts alike. Each Barnes & Noble bookstore serves as a welcoming locale where people can immerse themselves in literature, share their passion for reading, and enjoy a high-quality cafe experience. The stores offer a broad range of books, magazines, gifts, and cafe products, all designed to enrich the customer experience. This iconic brand has built its reputation on an inviting atmosphere, dedicated customer service, and a commitment to fostering literacy and community engagement.

As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you play a pivotal role within the cafe team, supporting a seamless and enjoyable experience for every customer. Your daily responsibilities involve greeting customers in a friendly and helpful manner, answering their queries, and ensuring they are connected with the right beverages and cafe items tailored to their tastes and preferences. Your role is not only about preparing drinks and serving food but also maintaining the presentation and ambiance of the cafe to the highest standards. This includes tasks such as stocking deliveries, tidying the baked goods display and dining areas, and operating registers efficiently and professionally.

Working as a Barista requires exhibiting key behaviors such as maintaining punctual attendance and a flexible schedule, staying positive and energetic in your work, supporting your colleagues with kindness, engaging cheerfully with customers, and showing a genuine passion and enjoyment for being a barista. These behaviors are essential for creating a positive work environment and exceptional customer service.

The position demands proficiency in using various technologies including registers, computers, and tablets, as well as merchandising skills to ensure the cafe and retail areas are visually inviting and clean. You will also be trained to prepare drinks and food items accurately by following recipes and product information, manage deliveries, and maintain strict sanitary and hygiene standards. Familiarity with loss prevention and conflict de-escalation is also part of your operational skill set.

Physical stamina is a must, as the job involves prolonged standing, frequent bending, lifting, and walking. Flexibility to work at different store locations within the cluster might also be expected. As you gain experience, your expertise will grow, enabling you to better promote cafe products, understand and share knowledge about seasonal offerings, enhance the cafe's visual appeal, and contribute to key sales initiatives. Your role is integral to the overall success of the bookstore and cafe team.

Barnes & Noble values advancing its employees, and as a Barista, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and move up to a Senior Barista position where you can tackle new challenges and grow your career. The company upholds all policies consistently and offers benefits tailored to the number of hours worked. Part-time employees receive benefits such as employee discounts, sick pay, and employee assistance programs, while those working more hours enjoy additional benefits including paid time off, maternity and parental leave, company holidays, transit benefits, 401(k) matching, comprehensive health coverage, disability and life insurance, and tuition reimbursement. Benefits may vary by location in compliance with state regulations.
