Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain that serves as a vibrant gathering place for readers and community members alike. Known for combining the joy of reading with an inviting cafe experience, Barnes & Noble offers a unique environment where book lovers can explore an extensive selection of books while enjoying quality food and beverages. Established as a trusted brand in the retail bookselling industry, Barnes & Noble bookstores not only provide an exceptional collection of books but also foster a warm and welcoming atmosphere through their cafes. These cafes are integral to the Barnes & Noble experience, inviting customers to relax, socialize, and enjoy expertly prepared drinks and snacks while immersed in their literary interests.

As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you become an essential member of the cafe team, responsible for creating a friendly and engaging environment that makes every customer feel welcome. Your role goes beyond making coffee; you are the heart of the cafe, greeting guests cheerfully, addressing their questions, and using your knowledge of beverages and cafe items to make personalized recommendations. You play a vital role in maintaining the appearance and efficiency of the cafe by unpacking deliveries, stocking items, tidying displays, and ensuring cleanliness throughout your shift.

The Barista position at Barnes & Noble requires proficiency in several operational competencies including the use of modern technology such as registers, tablets, and software applications. You will be trained to run registers efficiently, prepare food and drinks accurately using standardized recipes and product information, and uphold stringent sanitation and safety standards. Your daily responsibilities also include following FIFO (First In, First Out) practices for product freshness and quality, supporting bookfloor staff when necessary, and being vigilant about loss prevention and customer service best practices.

This physically active role demands prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and consistent movement across the cafe space. Flexibility in working hours is important as stores operate from early morning until late evening, every day of the week, including weekends and some holidays. You may also be called upon to support other Barnes & Noble stores within your cluster, fostering teamwork and collaboration across locations.

As you grow in experience, you will deepen your knowledge of the cafe’s beverage options, bakery items, savory snacks, and gifting merchandise. This expertise enables you to maintain attractive and appetizing product presentations, promote seasonal specials, and provide customized food and drink recommendations to enhance the customer experience. You will also become proficient in using training tools, maintaining hygiene and sanitation guidelines, and supporting key sales initiatives.

Barnes & Noble values positive workplace behaviors, such as reliability, punctuality, flexibility, teamwork, kindness, and a genuine enthusiasm for the barista role. Demonstrating these qualities ensures a high standard of service and a supportive team environment. Successful Baristas are encouraged to pursue advancement within the company, progressing to Senior Barista roles where they will take on greater responsibilities and continue to develop professionally.

In terms of employment benefits, Barnes & Noble offers a comprehensive package aligned with hours worked. For part-time employees working less than 20 hours weekly, benefits include employee discounts, an employee assistance program (EAP), and sick pay. Those working between 20 and 29.99 hours receive additional benefits such as paid time off, including maternity and parental leave, paid company holidays, transit benefits, and a 401(k) plan with company matching contributions. Full-time employees scheduled for 30 hours or more gain access to extensive healthcare coverage including medical, dental, and vision plans, healthcare and dependent care spending accounts, disability and life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and continued access to all previously mentioned benefits. These benefits vary by location and are subject to company plan terms and any applicable state regulations. Overall, a career as a Barista at Barnes & Noble promises a dynamic workplace where passion for customer service and community engagement is rewarded with opportunities for growth and comprehensive employee support.
