Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a leading retail bookseller with a long-standing tradition of fostering a love for reading and community engagement. The company operates large bookstores that combine the worlds of literature and leisure, offering customers an inviting space not only to browse books but also to enjoy a variety of cafe offerings. Barnes & Noble's bookstores are known for their wide selection of books, immersive events, and welcoming atmosphere. Within these retail spaces, the in-store cafes serve as central hubs for customers to relax, meet friends, and savor specialty beverages and food items. As part of a dynamic and customer-focused retail environment, the Barnes & Noble cafe team plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall shopping experience.
The Barista position at Barnes & Noble is an integral role within the cafe team responsible for delivering an exceptional customer experience. Baristas greet customers warmly and assist them in selecting beverages and cafe items that suit their preferences. Beyond customer interaction, this role involves maintaining a visually appealing and clean cafe space to ensure an inviting atmosphere. Baristas efficiently operate registers, handle transactions swiftly and accurately, and support inventory processes by unpacking and stocking deliveries. The role demands mastery of operational tasks including the preparation of food and beverages following precise recipes, effective merchandising of cafe counters and fixtures, and adherence to food safety and hygiene standards such as FIFO practices.
Successful Baristas at Barnes & Noble demonstrate what the company terms positive "behaviors" — traits that include punctuality, flexibility with scheduling, a positive attitude toward work, supportiveness toward colleagues, and a genuine enthusiasm for the barista role. The company fosters a culture where team members hold each other to high standards while supporting continuous learning and skill development. Baristas receive training to competently use technology including registers and tablets, and to develop merchandising and customer service skills that contribute to the cafe's smooth operation.
Physically, the position requires stamina and mobility as Baristas will be standing for extended periods, frequently bending, lifting, and walking. Flexibility to support multiple stores within the local cluster may be part of the job. As experience grows, Baristas are expected to deepen their knowledge of cafe products—ranging from beverages to bakery and savory items—and to actively promote key sales objectives and promotional offers. They will also gain skill in making personalized food and beverage recommendations and maintaining safety and sanitation standards.
The Barista role is designed to be a stepping stone on a rewarding retail career path at Barnes & Noble. As Baristas demonstrate mastery of their responsibilities, they can anticipate advancement opportunities such as moving into the Senior Barista position with additional challenges and growth potential. Commitment to company policies and a passion for providing customers with outstanding service form the bedrock of success in this role.
Barnes & Noble offers a comprehensive benefits package that varies depending on the number of hours scheduled per week. Part-time employees working fewer than 20 hours receive employee discounts, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and sick pay. Those working between 20 and 29.99 hours benefit additionally from paid time off including maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, transit benefits, and a 401(k) plan with company match. Employees scheduled for 30 hours or more enjoy the most extensive benefits, including comprehensive health insurance encompassing medical, dental, and vision coverage, healthcare and dependent care spending accounts, disability benefits, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, in addition to all previously mentioned benefits. All benefits are subject to plan terms and may vary based on location and regulations. Prospective employees can contact recruiters or Human Resources for detailed and current information.
