Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain that serves as a hub for readers and the community, offering a unique blend of books and a welcoming café environment. It is widely recognized for its commitment to providing not only a diverse range of books but also a cozy, inviting space where customers can relax, enjoy beverages, and connect over shared interests. Each Barnes & Noble location is thoughtfully designed to create a community-focused atmosphere where everyone from casual browsers to avid readers can find something to love.
As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you play a crucial role in bringing this experience to life. Your responsibilities place you at the core of the café’s operations, where you greet customers warmly, answer their questions, and go the extra mile to help them find the perfect beverage and café items. This role is not just about serving coffee; it’s about creating memorable moments for visitors, making them feel valued and cared for. Beyond customer interaction, you are integral to maintaining the café’s presentation, ensuring that the environment remains clean, organized, and inviting. You will assist with the stocking and unpacking of deliveries, ensuring that everything is in place and ready for customers. Working the register efficiently and courteously is another essential part of your duties, contributing to the smooth functioning of the store and enhancing customer satisfaction.
The ideal candidate exhibits what Barnes & Noble refers to as good "behaviors." These include reliable and punctual attendance, flexibility to fill scheduling gaps during the store’s extensive hours, and a positive attitude toward work. Being supportive and kind to colleagues and always cheerful with customers is highly valued. Willingness to learn new skills and a genuine enjoyment of the barista role are fundamental to success in this position.
Training is provided to equip you with the necessary operational competencies. This includes proficiency in using various technologies such as registers, computers, and tablets, developing merchandising skills to keep the café visually appealing, and mastering the art of food and drink preparation accurately and efficiently. You will also be trained in maintaining cleanliness according to the store’s hygiene and sanitation guidelines, following First In First Out (FIFO) product handling practices, and supporting loss prevention efforts through proper identification and management of potential issues.
The role entails significant physical activity, including prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and walking. There is also an opportunity to work collaboratively across multiple store locations if needed. As you gain experience, you will deepen your product knowledge, learn to customize food and beverage options to suit customer preferences, and contribute to key sales promotions and merchandising efforts. This progression leads to further career development opportunities, including advancement to a Senior Barista position.
Barnes & Noble offers a competitive benefits package that varies based on hours worked, including employee discounts, paid time off, maternity and parental leave, company paid holidays, 401(k) with company match, comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, and vision), dependent care accounts, disability insurance, life insurance, transit benefits, and tuition reimbursement. These benefits support employee wellbeing and professional growth, reflecting the company’s commitment to a positive and inclusive workplace environment.
As an Affirmative Action Employer, Barnes & Noble is dedicated to diversity and provides equal employment opportunities regardless of protected characteristics such as race, gender, disability, and more. The company supports reasonable accommodations to ensure all candidates have equal access to employment opportunities and can perform their roles effectively. This role at Barnes & Noble is perfect for individuals who thrive in a dynamic, customer-focused environment and are passionate about books, hospitality, and community engagement.
