Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned and beloved bookstore chain that serves as a vibrant gathering place for readers and community members alike. With a rich history and a passionate commitment to fostering a love of literature, Barnes & Noble offers a unique experience where books and culture meet. Beyond housing an extensive collection of books across all genres, Barnes & Noble also features inviting café spaces that provide a comfortable environment for customers to relax, read, and enjoy specialty beverages and café items. This combination of bookselling and café services positions Barnes & Noble as a destination location for book lovers and casual visitors, cultivating an atmosphere that encourages exploration, learning, and connection.

The role of a Barista at Barnes & Noble is integral to the café team, positioned at the heart of the customer experience. As a Barista, you will be the friendly face greeting customers, answering their questions, and helping them select the perfect beverages and café offerings to complement their visit. Your duties extend beyond serving drinks; you are responsible for ensuring the café's presentation is always attractive, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting overall operations by unpacking and stocking deliveries and tidying up bakery cases and dining areas.

This role entails working with point-of-sale technology, including registers, tablets, and computers, to facilitate fast and friendly customer service. Proficiency in operating registers and managing transactions efficiently is key to providing a high-quality experience. Baristas play a critical role in upholding health and safety standards by following proper food preparation practices, adhering to sanitation guidelines, and consistently executing cleaning duties throughout their shift.

Barnes & Noble emphasizes core behaviors that define a successful Barista. Reliability and punctuality, flexibility in scheduling, and a positive and energetic approach to work are essential. Collaboration and kindness toward colleagues, cheerful and attentive customer service, eagerness to learn new skills, and genuine enjoyment of the barista role are fundamental attributes that the company values highly.

The role requires physical stamina due to its demands for prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. Baristas may also be called upon to assist other store locations within a regional cluster, fostering teamwork and support across the broader organization.

As you gain experience, your expertise will expand. You will develop a deep knowledge of the café's product offerings, including beverages, baked goods, savory items, and gifting options. This knowledge empowers you to maintain an engaging and appetizing product presentation and share information about new seasonal offerings, promotions, and customization options with customers. With ongoing growth, Baristas are encouraged to take advantage of training tools and enhance their understanding of café safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards to maintain the highest quality.

Career growth is expected for those who excel in this role, with opportunities to advance to Senior Barista positions, where you will face new challenges and increased responsibilities. Complying with company policies and maintaining the integrity of the customer experience remain critical throughout your career progression.

Barnes & Noble values its employees and offers a range of benefits based on hours worked. Employees working fewer than 20 hours per week receive employee discounts, access to employee assistance programs, and sick pay. Those scheduled between 20 and 29.99 hours gain additional benefits such as paid time off—including maternity and parental leave—company paid holidays, transit benefits, and a 401(k) plan with company match. Employees working 30 hours or more enjoy the most comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, healthcare and dependent care spending accounts, disability and life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and more. These benefits support employees' well-being and professional development and may vary based on location and state regulations.
