Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookselling company well-loved for its bookstores that serve as welcoming gathering places for readers and communities alike. Each Barnes & Noble bookstore combines the charm and comfort of a classic bookstore with the warmth and convenience of an in-store cafe, creating a unique environment where literature and leisure blend seamlessly. Their cafes offer a wide range of coffee beverages, snacks, and other cafe items that complement the reading experience, making it not just a retail environment but a destination for book lovers and casual visitors alike. The Barnes & Noble brand has become synonymous with quality, community engagement, and exceptional customer service, emphasizing a strong culture centered on teamwork and dedication to creating memorable customer interactions. This role is essential in fostering the inviting atmosphere that keeps customers returning time and again.
The Barista position at Barnes & Noble is an integral part of the cafe team and plays a central role in delivering that warm and inviting experience. As a Barista, you are not only the face of the cafe but also a crucial member of the overall bookstore team. Your responsibilities extend beyond simply preparing and serving beverages; you act as a welcoming guide for customers, answering their questions, and helping them discover the perfect drinks and cafe items tailored to their tastes. You drive the operational side of the cafe by maintaining cleanliness and presentation, handling stock and deliveries efficiently, as well as using registers skillfully to provide quick and friendly service. This position demands a blend of excellent interpersonal skills, operational proficiency, and an enthusiastic, positive approach to work.
At Barnes & Noble, the role of Barista is supported by comprehensive training aimed at mastering operational competencies such as running registers, handling technology including tablets and computers, developing visual merchandising and maintaining the attractive presentation of the cafe and related retail fixtures. Baristas collaborate closely with colleagues, exemplify reliability, punctuality, and flexibility in scheduling, and commit to the company’s high behavioral standards. This job requires physical stamina due to prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and extensive walking, ensuring that customers and fellow team members enjoy a consistently pleasant environment.
Moreover, career development is a key aspect of this role. As you grow in experience, you will deepen your knowledge of cafe products across beverages, bakery, and savory options, enhancing your ability to engage customers effectively and support sales objectives and promotions. This knowledge will empower you to recommend food and beverage customizations, contribute to the overall visual and operational success of the cafe, and uphold safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines diligently. The role offers a clear career path from Barista to Senior Barista, with an opportunity to take on leadership responsibilities and continue professional growth.
Employees enjoy a benefits package that varies with their weekly hours but typically includes employee discounts, paid time off, sick pay, maternity and parental leave, company holidays, retirement savings with a company match, health insurance options (medical, dental, and vision), and tuition reimbursement among others. Barnes & Noble’s inclusive culture and commitment to employee development make it an exceptional place for those who enjoy crafting memorable cafe experiences within a vibrant retail setting.
