Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a well-established bookstore company known for being a vibrant gathering place for readers and the local community. Each store combines the joy of bookselling with the warmth of a café environment to create a unique experience. Barnes & Noble bookstores are dedicated to serving not only as a retail destination for book lovers but also as a social hub where customers can engage with others over a great book and quality beverages. With a strong reputation in the book retail industry and a commitment to customer service, Barnes & Noble focuses on maintaining an inviting and enjoyable atmosphere that promotes literacy, relaxation, and social interaction.

As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you play a critical role in this dynamic environment by becoming an essential member of the café team. Your work goes beyond simply preparing coffee and beverages; you are the face of the café, welcoming customers cheerfully, assisting them in selecting the perfect drinks or café items, and ensuring they receive a warm and professional service. The role requires a genuine passion for providing excellent customer experiences through friendly interactions and an enthusiasm for beverage preparation. You will be involved in maintaining the café's clean and attractive presentation, managing product displays, and efficiently running the cash registers to support smooth operational flow.

This position demands reliability and flexibility, as the stores operate daily from early mornings to late evenings, including weekends and most holidays. You will need to demonstrate behaviors such as punctual attendance, positivity, teamwork, customer focus, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new skills. Your responsibilities also include handling deliveries, stocking products correctly using FIFO (First In First Out) methods, cleaning and sanitation duties to uphold health standards, and supporting bookstore colleagues when needed. Physical activities such as prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and walking are inherent to the role.

The training program at Barnes & Noble equips you with operational competencies to proficiently use technologies like registers, tablets, and software tools. You will develop merchandising skills to keep the café and retail spaces visually appealing and learn food and beverage preparation techniques using recipe guides and product specifications. An understanding of loss prevention and customer service de-escalation tactics forms part of your knowledge base. As you gain experience, your expertise will expand to product knowledge, promotional activities, and customized recommendations, contributing actively to the café’s success.

Barnes & Noble fosters career growth, encouraging Baristas who master their skills to advance to Senior Barista roles, taking on increased responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Employment benefits vary according to hours worked, including employee discounts, paid time off, health benefits, retirement savings plans, and educational opportunities. This role is ideal for those who enjoy engaging with people, appreciate a vibrant team setting, and are passionate about delivering high-quality beverage experiences in a renowned book retail environment.
