Job Description
Barnes & Noble is one of the largest booksellers in the United States and a cherished community hub for readers and book lovers alike. With its extensive selection of books, magazines, and gift items, Barnes & Noble also operates in-store cafés that serve as welcoming spaces for customers to relax and enjoy quality beverages and snacks. These bookstores are known not just for their impressive literary collections but also for their dedication to offering a friendly and inviting atmosphere for everyone, including avid readers, students, and casual browsers. By combining retail and café experiences, Barnes & Noble provides a unique environment where customers can connect over books and refreshments, supporting a culture of learning and community engagement.
As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you play a vital role in creating an enjoyable and welcoming café experience for customers. You will be a proud member of a busy team responsible for greeting guests with warmth and enthusiasm, responding to their inquiries, and guiding them toward beverages and food items that best suit their tastes. Your day-to-day job will involve expertly crafting a variety of drinks, maintaining an attractive and clean café area, and handling transactions efficiently at the register. You’ll be integral to supporting the operational flow of the café, including restocking supplies, unpacking deliveries, tidying bakery and dining areas, and ensuring the presentation remains inviting and visually appealing.
The role requires much more than simply preparing drinks; it also demands a high level of energy, a positive attitude, and a genuine delight in interacting with customers and colleagues. Barnes & Noble values what they call "behaviors" that include punctuality, flexibility to accommodate varying store hours, mutual support among team members, and a consistent cheerful demeanor with customers. Embracing these behaviors ensures that the café maintains an upbeat and efficient environment that enhances customer satisfaction and team morale.
Training is an essential component of becoming a successful Barnes & Noble Barista. You will be educated in using all necessary technology, including registers, tablets, and software tools, making you comfortable and efficient at handling sales and inventory processes. Your skills will grow beyond the basics to include merchandising competencies that keep the café visually pleasing and sanitary, mastery of FIFO practices, and knowledge to safely prepare and customize food and beverages. You’ll learn to handle deliveries and stocking with accuracy and work alongside the bookfloor team when required. Physical stamina is important as the role involves standing for extended periods, bending, lifting, and moving around the store frequently.
Growth opportunities are built into the Barista role, with an expectation to develop expertise in café products, sales promotions, and retail strategies. You’ll gain the ability to make personalized recommendations to customers, expand your knowledge of safety and hygiene standards, and support broader store success. Advancement to Senior Barista status comes with increased responsibilities and new challenges, offering a rewarding career path within Barnes & Noble’s dynamic retail and café setting.
Benefits vary based on scheduled hours but include employee discounts, paid time off, maternity and parental leave, company holidays, transit benefits, 401(k) with matching contributions, comprehensive health coverage (medical, dental, vision), disability and life insurance, and tuition reimbursement. Barnes & Noble also prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer, committed to diversity, inclusion, and offering reasonable accommodations to qualified applicants. This role offers not only an opportunity to engage in a rewarding customer service position but also to be part of a respected organization centered around community, knowledge, and great customer experiences.
