Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a leading bookstore chain and a beloved community hub for readers. With numerous locations nationwide, Barnes & Noble offers a rich environment where literature lovers can explore a vast selection of books alongside an inviting café experience. The bookstore is known not only for its extensive inventory of books but also for its warm, community-oriented atmosphere and dedicated team members who provide exceptional customer service. Barnes & Noble’s café section complements the bookstore by providing a comfortable space where customers can enjoy freshly brewed coffee, specialty beverages, and a variety of baked goods. This combination of books and café creates a unique environment where customers can relax, connect, and engage with the community. As part of its commitment to excellence, Barnes & Noble seeks enthusiastic individuals who want to be part of a vibrant team in a dynamic retail and food service setting.

The Barista role at Barnes & Noble is integral to maintaining the welcoming environment of the café and enhancing the overall customer experience. Baristas are essential team members who engage warmly with customers, offering a helpful and cheerful greeting while assisting them in selecting beverages and café items that best suit their tastes. This role requires a dedication to providing high-quality service, demonstrating strong operational skills, and maintaining an attractive and clean café presentation. Baristas are responsible for preparing food and drinks accurately, managing casher registers efficiently, and supporting daily café operations such as receiving deliveries, stocking products, and keeping the café space tidy.

Employees in this position must exhibit what Barnes & Noble terms “good behaviors,” which include reliable attendance, flexibility in scheduling including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays, a positive attitude towards their work, a supportive approach toward colleagues, and a genuine love for being a barista. Baristas are supported with training to master various operational competencies including using registers, computers, and other technology, maintaining merchandising and cleanliness standards, preparing food and beverages according to recipes and guidelines, and understanding loss prevention and customer service best practices.

The role also involves significant physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking. Baristas may also be required to assist in other store locations within the Barnes & Noble Cluster to support operations as needed.

As baristas gain experience, they develop expertise in café product knowledge and merchandising, enabling them to contribute to sales objectives and enhance customer interaction by making product recommendations and promoting new items and café offerings. Opportunity for career advancement is available, with a clear pathway to becoming a Senior Barista where individuals can take on greater responsibilities and access further growth opportunities.

Barnes & Noble is committed to equal employment opportunities and promotes a diverse and inclusive workplace. The company adheres to policies that ensure fair treatment of all employees without regard to personal characteristics and offers reasonable accommodations as needed to support applicants and employees. Overall, the Barista position at Barnes & Noble provides a rewarding, community-focused retail and food service experience where one can develop valuable skills and grow professionally within a respected company.
