The Barista role is a core component of the Barnes & Noble Café team. As a Barista, you stand at the intersection of customer service and food and beverage preparation within an iconic brand that connects deeply with readers and local communities. Your primary responsibility is to create a welcoming atmosphere for customers by greeting them warmly, answering questions, and guiding them towards the perfect café items to complement their bookstore experience. Demonstrating enthusiasm and positivity is key to making each customer’s visit memorable.

Beyond customer interaction, the role involves operational tasks critical to the smooth running of the Café. Baristas handle deliveries, restocking, and maintaining an attractive and clean presentation of the café and bakery areas. Mastery of cash registers and point-of-sale technology ensures swift and accurate service, enhancing customer satisfaction. Training is provided to develop your skills across several competencies including food and beverage preparation, merchandising, loss prevention, and customer safety.

The role demands physical endurance, involving extended periods of standing, repetitive bending, and frequent movement throughout the store. Baristas should be flexible to cover shifts across store locations if required, demonstrating teamwork and adaptability within the overall Barnes & Noble cluster.

As you gain experience, your expertise in café operations will deepen. You will develop knowledge about the café’s beverage and food offerings, merchandising strategies, and ultimately, how to contribute to sales initiatives through informed customer recommendations and support of promotions. There is a clear career progression path in this role, starting as a Barista and advancing to Senior Barista with increasing responsibilities and leadership opportunities.
