Job Description
The Davis Monthan Community Center, located at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, is a pivotal facility that supports Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) activities for personnel in the Air Force and Space Force. This center provides a variety of services aimed at enhancing the quality of life for military members, their families, and the community at large. It operates through Non-appropriated Fund (NAF) initiatives, which means that it is funded through revenue-generating activities rather than direct government appropriations. This model allows the center to offer unique services and opportunities for recreation, leisure, and community engagement. The Community Center is dedicated to maintaining high standards of service and creating an inviting environment that fosters community spirit and support for military lifestyles.
This job opening is for a Specialty Coffee Barista within the Davis Monthan Community Center. This permanent position offers intermittent work hours with a pay rate of $19.59 per hour at the NA 4 pay scale grade. Being a flexible position, it does not come with benefits, but it provides an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic, customer-focused environment. The role centers on preparing specialty beverages in a standalone specialty coffee operation, using commercial-grade espresso machines and fresh coffee beans. As a Specialty Coffee Barista, the incumbent is responsible for crafting a variety of drinks including but not limited to cappuccinos, lattes, espressos, hot chocolate, frappuccinos, iced coffees, smoothies, and other flavored fruit drinks. The barista also serves alcoholic beverages such as beer, prepared upon request.
In this role, the barista will operate the espresso machine, adjust the grind of coffee beans, dose and tamp the ground coffee, and ensure the perfect extraction to meet established beverage recipes and customer modifications. In addition to beverage preparation, the barista will prepare and serve assorted food items including sandwiches, cookies, muffins, and pastries. Responsibilities extend to operating a cash register, receiving payments, and providing accurate change. Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the machine and work environment is vital, including following strict cleaning protocols and preventive maintenance for daily operations.
The position requires considerable physical effort such as heavy lifting up to 40 pounds, continuous standing, bending, stooping, and reaching. The employee may also be tasked with opening and closing the facility, setting up work areas, maintaining surface cleanliness, and replenishing condiments and stock supplies. Other duties include operating dishwashers, performing heavy-duty cleaning tasks like sanitizing coffee machines, walls, floors, and garbage cans. Inventory assistance and documentation for cash fund accountability are also expected as part of the job.
Working independently after receiving initial instructions, the barista is supervised with guidance on work procedures and deadlines. This position requires dedication to providing high-quality service and ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for patrons at all times. Candidates must successfully complete a background investigation, pre-employment physical, and obtain a Food Handler's Certificate or complete the required food handler's training. The role is open to the public including U.S. citizens, nationals, and those who owe allegiance to the United States, reflecting a diverse and inclusive workforce. This position is not eligible for telework, relocation expenses, or security clearance and does not require a drug test.
