Job Description

Steppenwolf Theatre Company, based in Chicago, Illinois, is a renowned cultural institution celebrated for its influential contributions to theatre arts both nationally and internationally. Established in 1976 by a collective of actors, this ensemble-based theatre has grown to include a diverse and talented group of actors, directors, playwrights, and stage managers who collaborate to produce compelling and provocative performances. Situated in a vibrant neighborhood at 1700 N Halsted St, Steppenwolf is committed to inclusivity, collaboration, and accountability in all its endeavors. The company embraces an anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework in its operations and decision-making processes, fostering an environment where all individuals feel respected and valued. Steppenwolf Theatre Company is currently seeking a dedicated and personable part-time Barista and Food Handler to join its team at the Front Bar, the cafe and bar connected to the main theatre space. This role offers an hourly wage of $16.90 and provides a wonderful opportunity to be part of a warm, neighborhood-oriented venue that serves high-quality coffee and espresso from Dark Matter, fresh pastries from West Town Bakery, and in-house made food items including breakfast pastries, salads, sandwiches, small plates, and desserts. The Front Bar serves as a dynamic gathering place for theatre patrons and the local community throughout the day, playing an integral role in the overall theatre experience. The part-time Barista and Food Handler position reports directly to the Food and Beverage Director and involves working primarily from 9 AM to 4 PM daily, with a focus on supporting busy morning hours and matinee performances on weekends. The role requires excellent customer service skills, a deep knowledge of beverage and food offerings, and the ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards at the service station. Candidates must be adept at providing adaptive service that aligns with the unique environment of a theatre operation, including accommodating patrons with disabilities with professionalism and sensitivity. Additionally, this role involves coordination with the box office and other departments to enhance the efficiency of service and assist in maintaining the safety and presentation of public spaces. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume setting and enjoy engaging proactively and positively with a diverse mix of patrons and colleagues. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication skills, and a commitment to fostering an equitable work environment that supports gender inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, racial equity, and accessibility. Experience as a barista or server in a busy restaurant or bar is highly desirable, alongside a proactive approach to education about coffee, tea, and food offerings to enrich the customer experience. Steppenwolf Theatre Company offers its employees a chance to be part of a respected cultural institution dedicated to artistic excellence and social responsibility. As part of the team, you will contribute to a creative and inclusive atmosphere where your work impacts the theatre-going experience profoundly. This role promises a rewarding blend of customer service, food and beverage expertise, and involvement in a vibrant arts community. For individuals passionate about hospitality and the arts, this is an exceptional opportunity to develop your skills and participate in a mission-driven organization that values diversity and continuous learning.
