The Barista role at HMSHost, based in the Boston Airport Food & Beverage location, is a dynamic position responsible for ensuring an exceptional customer experience within a Starbucks establishment. This non-exempt role, typically reporting to the Store Manager, entails fulfilling orders, processing sales transactions, and supporting various operational tasks such as cleaning, maintaining stock levels, and upholding inventory standards. The Barista serves as the frontline representative of both HMSHost and Starbucks, tasked with greeting customers, providing product information, and enhancing sales through upselling techniques.

In this role, the Barista is expected to prepare beverages consistent with Starbucks and HMSHost standards, operate cash registers with precision, and adhere strictly to the company's policies on customer service and cash handling. A critical part of the job is educating customers on coffee varieties, preparation methods, and home brewing tips, thereby enriching their overall experience. The position requires maintaining a clean and organized customer area and ensuring operational safety and security measures are followed at all times. The Barista must perform effectively even during peak times, maintaining composure and leadership qualities to facilitate smooth store operations.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact with the public and coworkers in a friendly, enthusiastic and outgoing manner
  • Physical ability to bend, twist, and stand for extended periods
  • Ability to speak, read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence and policy documents
  • Some prior cash handling and customer service experience preferred
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays

Job Duties

  • Greets customers and takes food order
  • provides information about products and looks for opportunity to up-sell products
  • Prepares all drink orders to Starbucks and HMSHost standards
  • Operates a cash register and receives payment from customers in cash or credit card, accurately counts and provides change to customers as required, and follows all HMSHost customer service and cash handling policies and procedures
  • Educates and informs customers about the differences among coffee beans, coffee preparation and home brewing methods
  • Cleans and stocks customer area
  • Follows HMSHost and Starbucks operational policies and procedures, including those for safety and security, to ensure the safety of all partners during each shift
  • Maintains a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep store operating to standard and to set a positive example for the shift team
