Job Description

The Barback position plays a crucial supportive role in the daily operations of the bar. The successful candidate will act as an energetic and outgoing team member who helps ensure that the bar runs smoothly and efficiently. This involves basic prep work behind the bar such as refilling ice bins, restocking beer and liquor supplies, cutting garnishes, and changing kegs in the keg room. Importantly, the role requires the ability to multitask, maintain a clean and tidy environment, and offer polite and professional service both to customers and co-workers.

Barbacks are responsible for key backstage tasks that keep the bar operating without interruption. They organize barware, clear and clean the bar in a timely manner, and assist in maintaining a safe and hygienic workspace by cleaning spills and emptying trash. Communication skills are essential for successfully coordinating with bartenders, servers, cooks, and supervisors to create an efficient working environment. The position also demands physical stamina as it involves lifting heavy items like kegs and moving around the facility safely and quickly.

Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old or meet state age requirements
  • Ability to handle, carry or lift items weighing up to 200 pounds (kegs, ice, glasses, trays, etc.)
  • Ability to move about the facility efficiently and safely
  • Ability to handle food, objects, products and utensils effectively and safely
  • Ability to bend, stand, stoop, kneel as required
  • Ability to withstand potential climate temperature changes in assigned work area
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends and/or holidays if needed

Job Qualifications

  • Food service experience with general knowledge of bar/nightclub operations
  • Must speak fluent English, other languages preferred
  • Must be at least age 18 or older, depending on state regulations
  • Communication skills are utilized a significant amount of time when interacting with guests, cooks, wait staff, and supervisors
  • Alcohol awareness certification and/or food service permit or valid health/food handler card as required by local or state government agency
  • Reading and writing abilities are utilized often when taking orders, completing paperwork, etc.
  • Mathematical skills, including basic math are used frequently
  • May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays

Job Duties

  • Show that you are an energetic, outgoing, fun person while maintaining professionalism
  • Perform basic prep work behind the bar: refilling ice bins, restocking beer/liquor, cutting garnishes
  • Change empty kegs in keg room, including moving full kegs of beer
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and tidy environment by cleaning up spills and emptying trash cans
  • Organizes bar and drink ware
  • Clear and clean bar in a timely manner
  • Perform more than one task at a time
  • Offer polite, professional, and courteous customer service
  • Communicate effectively, clearly, patiently and humorously with co-workers and guests
  • Complete all side work as assigned
