Job Description

The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery (OMB) is a renowned craft brewery located in Charlotte, North Carolina. Established in 2009, OMB has grown to become one of Charlotte’s premier destinations for beer lovers who seek authentic and high-quality brews. The brewery strictly adheres to the German Purity Law, Reinheitsgebot, which dates back to 1516 and mandates that beer be made solely from water, barley, hops, and yeast. This commitment ensures that OMB’s beers maintain traditional and genuine flavors, upholding centuries-old brewing standards. The original OMB site is situated in Charlotte's vibrant Lower South End (LoSo) neighborhood, featuring a state-of-the-art production facility, an inviting restaurant, and a spacious one-acre biergarten. The location is cherished for its lively yet family-friendly atmosphere, regularly hosting events and festivals that attract locals and visitors alike. OMB’s beers are distributed statewide through an independent wholesaler network, making them accessible across North Carolina.

In Spring 2024, OMB expanded to a second location in the Ballantyne neighborhood of South Charlotte. This significant growth introduced a spacious, two-story, 14,000-square-foot restaurant and biergarten, designed to accommodate an even larger community of craft beer enthusiasts. OMB takes pride in its deep community involvement and strong support of the craft beer movement, offering a diverse range of brews from traditional German-style lagers to inventive seasonal selections. Recognized as an iconic part of Charlotte’s beer scene, OMB embodies German brewing traditions in the Southern United States.

The Barback role at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery is an essential service team position that provides critical support to the bartenders and overall service staff to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for guests at both the OMB Ballantyne and LoSo locations. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Barback's primary responsibility is to assist in maintaining bar operations’ efficiency and cleanliness while upholding exceptional customer service standards.

This position involves executing opening and closing tasks such as restocking garnishes, straws, and napkins, ensuring the bar stays fully stocked with ice, wine, cider, and beer, and confirming the proper function of taps and appliances. The Barback will handle changing out kegs and maintaining the cleanliness of bar and table areas by wiping surfaces, sweeping, mopping floors, removing used glassware, and scrubbing coolers and storage areas. Additionally, assisting with running food and bussing tables is part of the daily duties. A vital expectation for the Barback is to gain a solid understanding of the menu items and various beer styles to provide knowledgeable support to the team.

Compensation for this position ranges from $15 to $30 per hour, dependent on service levels, with additional pooled tips paid via payroll. Full-time employees are eligible for medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage. Other benefits include a free beer stipend, 401(k) plan with company match, employee discounts on food, merchandise, and beer, and opportunities for career growth within the company. OMB’s core values emphasize dedication to quality without shortcuts, integrity, a service-minded approach, pride in their community, leadership, and teamwork, all of which guide the culture and expectations for every team member.
