Mortar & Pestle is the craft cocktail bar located inside Curry Up Now, a rapidly growing and popular restaurant known for its innovative take on Indian street food. Established as a part of the larger Curry Up Now group, Mortar & Pestle serves a curated selection of craft cocktails that blend classic techniques with modern mixology trends, aimed at delivering an exceptional bar experience in a lively yet thoughtful setting. We are currently seeking a talented Bartender to join Mortar & Pestle’s crew in San Mateo on either a part-time or full-time basis. The role requires candidates to work Sundays without exception, alongside other evening and holiday shifts. Compensation is hourly plus tips, reflecting the fast-paced, high-energy environment you will thrive in. As a bartender at Mortar & Pestle, you will be responsible for delivering top-tier drink service with speed and style, mastering the art of cocktail batching, precise pouring, and guest engagement. Your fluency in both classic cocktail preparation and enthusiasm for contemporary mixology will be essential in crafting drinks that not only taste excellent but are presented with flair. Additionally, you will provide warm and confident hospitality by interacting with guests at the bar and assisting restaurant tables when needed, supporting the full food and bar operations including cleaning, restocking, and POS system use.

Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year bartending experience in a restaurant or bar
  • Demonstrated success in service excellence, customer service, beverage and food service hospitality
  • Knowledge of OSHA and EEOC regulations, restaurant and food safety procedures
  • Point of Sale (POS) knowledge and skills preferred
  • Ability to successfully perform all job duties of the bartender role
  • Food Safety and Food Handler certification required
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate with guests, staff, and management
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English
  • Possesses basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Places a value on diversity and community and shows respect for others
  • Proven ability to problem solve and handle high stress situations
  • Must be prepared to multitask according to the demands of the business
  • Ability to identify and anticipate opportunities and implement corrective action steps
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Must have RBS

Job Qualifications

  • At least 1 year bartending experience in a restaurant or bar
  • RBS certification required
  • Food Handler's certification required
  • Strong communication skills in English
  • Team player mindset
  • Knowledge of cocktail mixing techniques and modern mixology
  • Ability to multitask and work in a high-energy environment
