We are currently seeking a dedicated Grocery Clerk specializing in Bakery and Deli departments to join our team. This role is pivotal in ensuring an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service and expert product knowledge. The Grocery Clerk (Bakery/Deli) will be responsible for preparing bakery and deli items to customer specifications using proper equipment while adhering to food safety standards. The position demands a person who can perform multiple tasks including product sampling, recommending products, inventory management, and equipment operation with the utmost attention to quality and safety.

The role also involves assisting the department manager in achieving sales and profit goals by monitoring quality assurance standards and ensuring product freshness and appropriate portion control to minimize shrink. The ideal candidate will embrace the Customer 1st strategy, actively promote trust and respect among associates, and help create an environment in which customers feel welcome, important, and appreciated. Being knowledgeable about the department’s products, including current promotions and specials, will enable the clerk to better assist customers in making informed purchasing decisions.

In addition, the Grocery Clerk (Bakery/Deli) will maintain detailed temperature logs, adhere strictly to food safety regulations, and report equipment or inventory discrepancies promptly to management. The successful candidate must comply with all safety programs, identifying unsafe conditions to ensure a secure workplace for both customers and colleagues. Responsibilities include preparing, packaging, labeling, stocking, and inventory control, always with an emphasis on quality and customer satisfaction.

Job Duties

  • Prepare bakery and deli items per customer requests using proper bakery equipment
  • Offer product samples to help customers discover new items
  • Inform customers of bakery and deli specials
  • Provide customers with fresh products in correct portion sizes to prevent shrink
  • Recommend deli or bakery items to customers
  • Use all bakery equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, slicers, and ovens according to company guidelines
  • Prepare foods according to temperature logs and cooking instructions
  • Measure, prepare and mix ingredients according to recipe using kitchen utensils and equipment
  • Adequately prepare, package, label and inventory ingredients and merchandise
  • Check product quality to ensure freshness and review sell by dates
  • Properly use kitchen equipment including stoves, scales, fryers, steamers
  • Label, stock and inventory department merchandise
  • Report product ordering and shipping discrepancies to the department manager
  • Understand store layout and locate products upon customer request
  • Stay current with present, future, seasonal and special ads
  • Gain and maintain product knowledge and respond to customer questions and suggestions
  • Maintain awareness of inventory and note discrepancies
  • Ensure proper temperatures in cases and coolers are maintained and logs updated
  • Promote trust and respect among associates
  • Create a welcoming environment for customers by answering product questions
  • Adhere to all food safety regulations and guidelines
  • Comply with safety procedures and report unsafe conditions
  • Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and report equipment needing repair
