The Grocery Clerk position, specializing in the Bakery and Deli departments, is integral to Kroger’s dedication to outstanding customer service and product quality. Grocery Clerks work closely with department managers to help meet sales and profit goals by adhering to rigorous quality assurance standards and the company’s Customer 1st strategy. In this capacity, clerks recommend products, prepare bakery and deli items according to specific customer requests, and ensure all products are fresh, properly portioned, and presented. They operate various bakery equipment, complete food preparation tasks according to temperature and safety standards, and assist customers in discovering new items by offering samples. This position requires good communication skills, basic math knowledge, and the ability to obtain a food handler’s permit. Job Duties

  • Create an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service
  • establish and maintain a safe and clean environment that encourages our customers to return
  • assist the department manager in reaching sales and profit goals established for the department and monitor all established quality assurance standards

  • prepare items per customer requests using proper bakery equipment
  • offer product samples to help customers discover new items or products
  • inform customers of bakery and/or deli specials
  • provide customers with fresh products that they have ordered and the correct portion size to prevent shrink
  • recommend deli or bakery items to customers to ensure they get the products they want and need
  • use all equipment in bakery such as refrigerators, freezers, slicers, and ovens according to company guidelines
  • prepare foods according to the food temperature logs and follow cooking instructions
  • measure, prepare and mix ingredients according to recipe, using kitchen utensils and equipment
  • package, label and inventory ingredients and merchandise
  • check product quality to ensure freshness and review sell by dates
  • properly use kitchen equipment such as stove, computerized scale, fryer, steamer, and robot coupe
  • label, stock and inventory department merchandise
  • report product ordering and shipping discrepancies to the department manager
  • understand the store's layout to locate products when requested by customers
  • stay current with present, future, seasonal and special ads
  • maintain knowledge of products sold within the department to respond to customer questions and make suggestions
  • monitor inventory and stocking conditions
  • ensure proper temperatures in cases and coolers are maintained and temperature logs are accurate
  • promote trust and respect among associates
  • create a welcoming environment for customers by answering questions about products
  • adhere to all food safety regulations and guidelines
  • comply with safety procedures and identify unsafe conditions
  • practice preventive maintenance by inspecting equipment and notifying the manager of repair needs
  • notify management of any customer or employee accidents
