The bakery department associate plays a critical role in creating an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service. This position is geared towards individuals who are caring, purpose-driven, and eager to learn. Associates will assist the department manager in reaching sales and profit goals while maintaining top quality assurance standards. The role requires establishing and maintaining a safe and clean environment that encourages repeat business from customers. It involves embracing the Customer 1st strategy and encouraging fellow associates to deliver excellent customer service consistently. Additionally, associates are expected to demonstrate the company’s core values which include respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety.

Working as a bakery associate at Pick 'N Save offers the opportunity to prepare bakery items using proper equipment, offer product samples to customers, and inform them about bakery specials. Maintaining knowledge of the department's products is essential for responding to customer questions and making recommendations that enhance their shopping experience. Associates will ensure products are fresh and correctly portioned to minimize shrink. They will also be responsible for using bakery equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, slicers, and ovens in accordance with company guidelines. The role includes preparing foods according to temperature logs and following specific cooking instructions to ensure food safety and quality.

This position also involves inventory management, including packaging, labeling, and stocking merchandise while monitoring product quality and reviewing 'sell by' dates. Associates are expected to maintain awareness of inventory and report any discrepancies or ordering and shipping issues to the department manager. Safety is paramount, so reinforcing safety programs by complying with procedures, identifying unsafe conditions, and notifying management is a vital component of the job. The associate must also practice preventive maintenance by inspecting equipment and reporting needs for repairs.

Job Duties

  • Create an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the department and throughout the store
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the department and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products
  • Prepare bakery items per customer requests using proper bakery equipment
  • Offer product samples to help customers discover new items or products they inquire about
  • Inform customers of bakery specials
  • Provide customers with fresh products that they have ordered and the correct portion size (or as close as possible to the amount ordered) to prevent shrink
  • Recommend bakery items to customers to ensure they get the products they want and need
