The Bakery Associate role at BGC plays an essential part in the grocery store's daily operations. This position involves packaging, labeling, and pricing bakery products while maintaining stock levels and ensuring product quality. An essential responsibility is monitoring freshness through attention to dates, appearance, and proper storage temperature controls. The role is hands-on and customer-facing, requiring individuals to assist with maintaining neat and attractive bakery displays, promote product sales through suggestive selling, and uphold food safety and quality standards.

Beyond technical skills, the Bakery Associate position demands a friendly and customer-focused attitude. Associates are expected to greet customers warmly, respond to inquiries, and take orders both in-person and via phone. This role requires teamwork, flexibility to work various schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays, and a strong commitment to workplace safety by identifying hazards and following proper procedures. Employees will be working in environments that may involve exposure to hot surfaces, sharp equipment, and refrigeration units, so physical stamina and attentiveness are important.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to read and operate digital equipment, meters, dials, and/or calibrated scales
  • Ability to safely operate hazardous tools and equipment such as a bread slicer, commercial oven, etc
  • Ability to learn new systems, methods, or processes
  • Ability to use precision and non-precision hand tools
  • Ability to work well with fellow partners and promote a team environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers and partners in written and verbal form
  • Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be attentive to potential hazards and remedy or place appropriate warning signs or devices around or near the hazard as soon as is reasonably possible
  • Must report any potential hazards that cannot be immediately remedied to a supervisor

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of 18 years of age required
  • Partners must be 21 years of age or older to drive for company business in accordance with the BGC Business Driver Policy
  • Food handler certification required
  • Typically involves on-the-job training

Job Duties

  • Adheres to quality control and food safety standards by stocking and rotating baked goods
  • Assists bakery personnel with preparing, packaging, labeling, and maintaining product displays
  • Promotes product sales through use of suggestive selling initiatives
  • Stacks pallets and sorts product into correct locations according to company efficiency standards and expectations
  • Maintains clean, safe and sanitary working and shopping environment by adhering to company safety procedures
  • Provides friendly and customer-service-oriented attitude by greeting customers, answering questions and taking orders by phone and in person
