The role of Bakery Cake Designer at Hy-Vee is a crucial position within the bakery department that combines creative skill with customer service expertise. This non-exempt role primarily involves decorating bakery items with precision and artistry while actively engaging with customers to take and fulfill cake orders either over the phone or in person. The Bakery Cake Designer not only serves as an artist responsible for the appearance of cakes and other baked goods but also as a friendly and knowledgeable representative of Hy-Vee, ensuring a welcoming and courteous service for all customers. In addition, the position requires collaboration with team members, managing production schedules, and maintaining high standards of sanitation and quality according to company guidelines.

This role is vital in ensuring customer satisfaction through effective communication, artistic talent, and efficient handling of wedding cakes and other specialty orders. The designer is expected to stay current with design trends and bakery techniques, take initiative in ordering and managing supplies, and support the bakery manager with display setups and weekly promotional needs. The position works under the guidance of the District Store Director and Bakery Department Manager but also functions as a lead worker at times, training and supervising part-time or less experienced employees.

Working conditions involve a store environment with exposure to typical bakery challenges such as flour dust, varying temperatures, noise, and cleaning chemicals. Physical demands include the ability to lift heavy items (up to 100 pounds shared), stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive motions required for decorating and customer service tasks. Safety and cleanliness are priorities, and adherence to company policies is mandatory.
