Job Description

Perseid Restaurant, located inside the Hotel Saint Augustine, is a celebrated neighborhood bistro that offers a unique Gulf Coast-inspired approach to the classic bistro experience. Known for serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Perseid blends casual dining with the charm of a special occasion destination. The restaurant emphasizes approachable, celebratory, and thoughtfully crafted food, which has recently earned it the distinction of being a Michelin-recommended establishment. This recognition highlights Perseid's commitment to quality and excellence in the culinary field, making it a vibrant part of Houston's dynamic food scene.

Hotel Saint Augustine itself is a boutique property that features 71 rooms distributed among five small buildings in the heart of the Montrose neighborhood. The hotel blends old-world charm with a modern, forward-thinking sensibility, reflecting the diverse spirit of Houston. Besides an inviting all-day restaurant, Hotel Saint Augustine houses a lobby bar and an intimate event space, positioning itself as a destination for both local residents and visitors. Part of the Bunkhouse/Hyatt family, the hotel prides itself on a supportive workplace culture and offers a range of employee benefits, including discounted room rates for friends and family, free parking, paid time off, and various retail discounts.

As a Pastry Cook at Perseid Restaurant, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the establishment’s high standards for quality and presentation of baked goods. This position involves preparing and baking a wide array of pastries, desserts, breads, and other baked delicacies in alignment with established recipes and specifications. The Pastry Cook ensures that every creation meets the restaurant's expectations for flavor, texture, and visual appeal, contributing significantly to the overall dining experience.

This role requires not only technical baking skills but also creativity, precision, and excellent organizational ability. You will be responsible for measuring and mixing ingredients using various kitchen appliances such as mixers, blenders, and ovens. Decorating pastries to achieve appealing presentation is an essential part of your duties, ensuring that visual appeal matches the culinary quality. You will also assist with menu development, testing new dessert recipes, and suggesting improvements that align with seasonal offerings and customer preferences.

Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards in the pastry station is critical for compliance with local health codes and overall kitchen efficiency. The Pastry Cook is expected to manage inventory levels carefully, report ingredient shortages, and ensure that all products are stored properly to avoid spoilage. Effective communication with the culinary team is essential to coordinate production schedules smoothly and ensure timely delivery of baked goods.

The position requires a dedication to quality control and consistency, performing regular product checks and making adjustments as necessary to maintain excellence. Additionally, the Pastry Cook supports the broader kitchen team by offering cross-training assistance and stepping in when needed, ensuring collective success in the fast-paced restaurant environment. With opportunities for professional growth and a chance to work in an award-winning, supportive establishment, this role is perfect for passionate cooks who want to develop their careers in a dynamic setting.
