Job Description

Levain Bakery is a highly respected bakery established in 1995 in New York City by Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, who transitioned from their careers as competitive triathletes and passionate bakers to launch this beloved small bread shop. Known for its iconic, generously-sized 6-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookies which were originally crafted to provide energy for triathlon training, Levain Bakery quickly grew from a neighborhood favorite on West 74th Street into a destination for dessert lovers from around the world. This growth has led to multiple bakery locations across the United States, complemented by an ecommerce platform that enables cookie lovers nationwide to enjoy Levain’s signature offerings through gift boxes and various baked goods.

Levain Bakery is deeply committed to quality, freshly baking all products on-site daily to ensure a consistently superior customer experience. The founders’ dedication to giving back is evident through their practice of donating any leftover baked goods to charity, a tradition upheld for nearly three decades. At the core of Levain’s philosophy are five fundamental values: Welcome All, emphasizing inclusive teamwork; Work Hard and Be Kind, highlighting responsibility and camaraderie; Lead with Heart, focusing on empathy and integrity; Rise Up, promoting initiative and continuous improvement; and Savor It, which underscores the importance of presence and enjoyment in all activities.

The Baker role at Levain Bakery is crucial to uphold the company’s reputation for excellence and consistency in baking. Bakers at Levain bring specialized skills that maintain the high standard expected in every item produced. This position requires not only in-depth baking expertise but also strong problem-solving abilities, a devotion to precision in following recipes and protocols, and commitment to the company’s values. Bakers are instrumental in preparing a variety of products, including bread, cookies, muffins, and cakes, all crafted with care and attention to detail to ensure quality and customer satisfaction.

Those who succeed as Bakers at Levain possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and work well within a team environment with positivity and empathy. The role demands adaptability, reliability, punctuality, patience, and professionalism, particularly in fast-paced and high-pressure situations. Bakers are expected to lead by example, motivating and inspiring their teammates while managing the physical demands of the position, which requires long hours standing and walking, sometimes involving heavy lifting and stair navigation.

Levain Bakery offers a competitive wage of $22-$25 per hour along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance; employer-funded healthcare reimbursement; commuter benefits; employee assistance programs; bike-share reimbursement; fully paid parental leave for 14 weeks; paid time off; and a 401(k) retirement plan with a 3.5% company match. The company fosters a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace where employees feel valued and empowered, reflecting its dedication to not only exceptional baking but also exceptional people practices. Working as a Baker at Levain Bakery is an opportunity to join a passionate, community-focused company where craftsmanship and care come together to create memorable experiences for all guests.
