Job Description

The Works is a flourishing regional chain of community-focused cafes dedicated to offering the highest quality food and the friendliest customer service. Each cafe is thoughtfully designed to reflect the unique character and specific needs of the communities served by The Works. Emphasizing a commitment to sourcing healthy, local ingredients, the menu features a variety of bagels, breakfast and lunch sandwiches, soups, salads, smoothies, fresh-baked sweets, and more. This dedication is not only to excellent food but also to contributing positively to the health and well-being of customers, team members, and the environment. The Works fosters a vibrant, community-oriented culture that provides continuous opportunities for growth and innovation in a welcoming atmosphere.

We are currently seeking a passionate and dedicated Baker to join our team in Portland, ME. This position is essential to the daily operations, requiring an early riser who enjoys working behind the scenes and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The role involves preparing and baking our signature items such as bagels, artisan breads, and other baked goods, ensuring that we maintain our commitment to quality and consistency. We welcome applicants with food preparation or baking experience, but are also open to training enthusiastic individuals who have a genuine passion for baking and food service.

This is a full-time and part-time position offering competitive pay, including hourly wages plus pooled staff tips, with paid training provided upon hire. The early morning shift starts from as early as 2:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M., which guarantees a balance of early work hours and afternoons free for personal activities. The role is ideal for those who enjoy working independently, have excellent communication skills, and can move efficiently between tasks. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining food safety standards, managing stock levels, performing regular inventory, and ensuring all baking tasks are completed with precision and care.

Being detail-oriented and highly organized is critical, along with the ability to follow directions closely and plan ahead. Candidates must be physically capable of standing and walking for over eight hours per shift, as well as reaching, bending, balancing, and transporting items frequently. Weekend availability is also a requirement, reinforcing our commitment to serving our community effectively every day of the week.

Joining The Works means becoming part of an industry-leading benefits program designed to support your well-being inside and outside of work. Employees enjoy exclusive discounts on nourishing meals, paid vacations to encourage work-life balance, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance programs, and performance-based bonuses. This is more than a job—it's an opportunity to be part of a community-centered cafe with a mission dedicated to health, happiness, and quality craftsmanship in all we do.
