Job Description
Levain Bakery is a renowned and beloved bakery established in 1995 in New York City by founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, both competitive triathletes and passionate bakers who left their previous careers to pursue their love for baking. What started as a small neighborhood bakery on West 74th Street quickly gained a reputation for its unforgettable baked goods, especially its signature 6-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookies which have become an icon in the baking world. Known for baking fresh products on-site daily and a strong commitment to giving back by donating leftover goods to charity, Levain Bakery has grown remarkably over nearly three decades. Today, it boasts multiple locations across the United States and offers a thriving e-commerce platform delivering gift boxes nationwide to delight cookie enthusiasts in every state.
Levain Bakery operates with a clear vision to create lifelong memories and a mission to unify people who approach their work and craft with great care and dedication. The company upholds five core values: welcoming all with a spirit of togetherness, working hard and being kind, leading with heart through empathy and integrity, rising up with initiative to improve, and savoring the moment to enjoy the process and have fun. These principles form the foundation of the company culture and daily operations.
The role of Baker at Levain Bakery is crucial to maintaining the bakery’s high standards of quality and consistency in its products. Bakers bring their specialized skills to the production process, ensuring every bread, cake, muffin, cookie, and baked good is crafted precisely according to the established recipes and protocols. The ideal candidate possesses in-depth baking knowledge, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a passion for precise recipe execution. Bakers at Levain are expected to uphold professionalism, demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and patience, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Alongside technical skills, the role requires strong interpersonal communication, the ability to motivate and inspire team members, and a calm demeanor when faced with challenges.
Bakers contribute significantly to team success by fostering meaningful workplace relationships, communicating openly and clearly with colleagues and management, and staying informed about new products, procedures, and promotions. Their daily responsibilities include measuring and preparing ingredients, monitoring baking times and temperatures, ensuring product quality, maintaining inventory levels using FIFO methods, complying with health and safety protocols, and occasionally engaging with customers. Maintaining a clean, well-organized workspace and embodying the core values of Levain Bakery are vital aspects of the job.
Compensation for the Baker position ranges from $22 to $25 per hour, reflecting the essential skills and dedication required. Levain Bakery also offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance; employer-funded healthcare reimbursement accounts; supplemental benefits such as commuter benefits, employee assistance programs, and bike-share reimbursements; 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave; one week of paid time off; and a 401K plan with a 3.5% company match.
Levain Bakery is committed to creating an inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace where every employee’s voice is valued, and individual perspectives contribute to a vibrant, supportive community. Those who share a passion for baking excellence and wish to join a team driven by care, integrity, and a sense of fun will find Levain Bakery a uniquely rewarding place to grow their career.
