Job Description
Open Arms of Minnesota (OAM) is a compassionate nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing and delivering healthy, nutritious meals to individuals living with life-threatening illnesses. Founded to support community health through food as medicine, OAM focuses on nourishing their clients both physically and emotionally, promoting wellness and hope. Operating out of two state-of-the-art kitchens, the agency orchestrates the efforts of over 6,500 volunteers annually, who collaborate with staff members to create meals tailored specifically to the unique nutritional needs of each client. Open Arms prioritizes the use of fresh, organic ingredients whenever possible, sourcing produce from their own urban gardens known as Open Farms, which are located across five sites. The organization serves nearly 3,687 clients, caregivers, and dependents throughout the Twin Cities metro area, along with families in need across Minnesota to whom meals are shipped weekly. All services provided by Open Arms are free of charge, reflecting their strong volunteer-driven spirit and commitment to an excellent volunteer experience. The organization is recognized for its cultural uniqueness and deep dedication to making every volunteer interaction meaningful and fulfilling. For more information, visit www.openarmsmn.org.
The Baker and Volunteer Ambassador position at Open Arms is a full-time, hourly role crucial to the mission of providing high-quality, health-supportive food production and volunteer coordination. This position is located in Minneapolis, MN, and entails the production of approximately 18,000 to 22,000 bakery items per week. Unlike typical bakery roles, this position uniquely emphasizes extensive volunteer interaction, requiring a welcoming, positive, and supportive demeanor to greet, check-in, and thank volunteers within the kitchen environment. The role involves managing volunteer assignments related to bakery tasks alongside ensuring strict food safety, sanitation, and bakery cleanliness standards. Additionally, the Baker and Volunteer Ambassador contribute to training volunteers in basic baking techniques and food safety, fostering a safe and efficient workspace for all participants. This position supports special events including Moveable Feast, Pop-up events, and catering, occasionally traveling to other Open Arms sites as needed. This role requires excellent culinary skills, organizational adaptability, leadership in a volunteer-driven kitchen setting, and the ability to maintain a high level of customer service to clients, volunteers, and colleagues alike. Scheduled for 40 hours a week with shifts from Tuesday to Saturday, this role provides competitive hourly pay at $23.00 and a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options. Open Arms values diversity and inclusivity and encourages candidates with transferable skills and experiences to apply, fostering a respectful and welcoming work environment for all. This position reports directly to the Bakery Manager, who oversees bakery operations and volunteer coordination efforts.
