The Cook position at Corewell Health's Nutrition Bake Shop in Royal Oak Hospital is a vital role that contributes directly to the quality and delivery of nutritious and delicious food options. This part-time role involves preparing hot and cold meals for a variety of service settings including onsite restaurants, room service, and grab & go markets within the hospital. The role demands versatility in culinary techniques such as frying, baking, broiling, braising, and grilling. Cooks will have the opportunity to prepare soups, cereals, eggs, entrees, vegetables, and other food items vital for patient and guest satisfaction. Attention to detail in ingredient preparation, standardized recipe adherence, food quality control, and presentation standards are essential to maintaining Corewell Health's food service excellence.

Cook team members also support food safety and operational standards by properly labeling, dating, and storing food products to minimize waste and maximize quality. Setting up steam tables, accurately logging food temperatures, and collaborating closely with other culinary and nutrition staff ensure seamless service delivery. This critical role operates under variable shifts with a schedule that includes daytime hours Monday through Friday and every other weekend work, providing flexibility for work-life balance. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant experience in food service or equivalent experience
  • CRT-Accredited Food Handler certification
  • CRT-Accredited Food Allergy Certificate
  • CRT-Accredited Food Protection Manager certification
  • ability to follow standardized recipes and food safety protocols
  • effective communication skills
  • capacity to work variable shifts including every other weekend
  • commitment to Corewell Health's drug-free and vaccine compliance policies

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of relevant experience in food service or equivalent experience
  • CRT-Accredited Food Handler - ANSI National Accreditation Board certification
  • CRT-Accredited Food Allergy Certificate - ANSI National Accreditation Board certification
  • CRT-Accredited Food Protection Manager, CFP - ANSI National Accreditation Board certification
  • vocational or technical courses in food preparation preferred
  • course of sixteen weeks to one year in baking education and cake decorating techniques preferred

Job Duties

  • Perform hot food preparation including frying, baking, broiling, braising and grilling
  • prepare soups, cereals, eggs, entrees, vegetables, and other food items as necessary
  • monitor food quantity needs as customer counts or volumes vary
  • assemble and prepare ingredients for cooking by cleaning and cutting
  • follow standardized recipes, calculating ingredients based on weight and volume
  • monitor food quality, assess food presentation in regards to taste, texture and eye appeal and maintain food temperatures
  • record temperatures correctly on temperature log sheets and take responsibility to replace food items that do not fit standards
  • store food items as required, labeling and dating items per standards
  • set up steam tables on patient and cafeteria tray lines
  • communicate with other staff members to ensure continuity and coordination of services
