The Baker role at Giant Eagle is a vital position within the Bakery team, focusing on crafting the freshest and most delicious bakery products using high-quality ingredients. This full-time or part-time role aims to enhance the customer experience by ensuring that all bakery items meet the highest standards of taste and presentation. Bakers are entrusted not only with the preparation and baking of products but also with providing exceptional customer service by answering questions, making product suggestions, and offering samples when appropriate.

This position requires a good understanding of scratch recipes, safety, and sanitation standards, along with the ability to perform bench work and operate bakery equipment proficiently. Bakers play a key role in maintaining the bakery’s efficiency by managing product rotation, code dating, cleaning, and storage of baked goods. The responsibilities of the Baker include preparing doughs and batters, baking products to precise specifications, and maintaining the overall cleanliness and safety of the bakery area. Job Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in Bakery or related industry desired
  • Successful completion of the Giant Eagle Apprenticeship program or 6 to 12 months bakery experience preferred
  • No high school diploma required
  • Familiarity with scratch recipes and baking equipment
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation standards in food preparation
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

Job Duties

  • Perform bench work according to established scratch procedures when necessary
  • Prepare product and form product to specifications as required according to scratch recipes
  • Bake prepared product using appropriate time and temperature as specified by recipe
  • Prepare Bakery products according to established recipes which include scratch recipes
  • Properly insert products into proof box, set controls, and close door to ensure proper size and shape of product
  • Prepare and fry donuts according to established procedures
  • Insert products into and retrieve products from the freezer to preserve freshness
  • Kindly answer questions and resolve problems to ensure guest requirements are met
  • Actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques and provide active sampling when appropriate
  • Provide exemplary customer service by greeting customers and ensuring they are able to locate the products they are looking for
  • Maintain safety as the top priority in all aspects of work for team members, guests, and products
  • Bake prepared and scratch product for bakery cases and displays, rotating product and ensuring code dating procedures are followed
  • Maintain cleanliness of equipment, tables, utensils, floors to ensure safety and sanitation regulations are met
  • Accurately record special orders on Bakery products to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Maintain proper safety and sanitation methods, emergency procedures, clean-ups, steritech, proper lifting and housekeeping to meet department standards
  • Understand all ingredients and their purposes used in manufacturing scratch baked goods
  • Assist in maintaining bakery backroom, cooler and freezer efficiency by unloading deliveries
  • Assemble necessary baking ingredients to prepare for baking operation including all scratch recipes
  • Assist in other areas as required
