Job Description

The Local General Store (TLGS) is a unique culinary establishment that harmoniously combines a whole animal butchery with a specialty bakery, embodying a deep commitment to quality, community, and sustainability. Situated in Hawaii, TLGS takes pride in working closely with local farmers and producers to source 100 percent locally grown meat, fruits, and vegetables. This dedication ensures that every product they offer not only supports the local food system but also champions food justice and environmental stewardship. The company operates with an open book policy, fostering transparency and mutual respect both internally among employees and externally with the community they serve. Moreover, TLGS is dedicated to continuous learning and listening, valuing the input of local farmers, ranchers, and educators to constantly improve their practices and empower Hawaii's food ecosystem.

As TLGS embarks on the exciting journey of opening its first brick and mortar location, the team is expanding to include passionate morning bakers who will become essential members of this collaborative environment. The bakers will gain the opportunity to work with seasonal, locally harvested fruits and vegetables, crafting an array of delectable pastries ranging from croissants and danishes to cookies, cakes, and other inventive desserts inspired by the bounty of the islands. This role is perfect for individuals who are enthusiastic about food, eager to learn new skills, and committed to working in harmony with their colleagues, including the butchers, to create savory and sweet products that truly reflect the company’s values. The shift hours run Thursday through Monday, offering two options: 5:00 am to 1:30 pm or 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Compensation starts at $18 per hour plus tips, complemented by a staff meal on each shift and employee discounts on bakery and butchery items. Although prior bakery or cooking experience is preferred, TLGS embraces a learning culture and is happy to train motivated individuals willing to grow. This role involves not only baking but also preparation tasks for the next day’s baking, such as bake-offs and ingredient prep, as well as cleaning duties to maintain a clean, safe, and efficient workspace. The environment is upbeat but grounded in a shared mission — to support the local food system, give back to the community by fundraising for organizations that restore local food systems, and minimize waste by donating food waste to companies that convert it into natural fertilizers.

Joining TLGS means more than just taking a job; it means committing to a set of core values centered on transparency, continuous learning, giving back, and uncompromising sourcing standards. You will find a vibrant, supportive team that takes pride in their craft and contributions to Hawaii’s food culture, making this opportunity ideal for those who are passionate about food, teamwork, and sustainability. TLGS is particularly interested in individuals who are happy to collaborate creatively with all members of the team and who derive pride and satisfaction from their work, knowing that their efforts nourish both customers and the community at large.
