Job Description
Levain Bakery is a renowned bakery founded in 1995 by Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald, two competitive triathletes and passionate bakers who left their previous careers to start a small bread shop in New York City. What started as a neighborhood favorite on West 74th Street with their iconic 6-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie has since grown into a beloved brand known nationwide. Today, Levain Bakery operates multiple bakeries across the United States and offers ecommerce gift boxes, sharing their delicious baked goods with cookie lovers everywhere. The bakery is committed to baking everything fresh on-site daily, maintaining a legacy of quality and community care by donating day-old items to charity.
Levain Bakery is driven by a clear vision to give rise to lifelong memories and a mission to unite people through their dedication to the craft of baking and providing exceptional customer experiences. The company upholds five core values that shape its culture and operations: welcoming all, working hard and being kind, leading with heart, rising up to improve, and savoring every moment with joy and presence.
The role of Baker at Levain Bakery is an essential position that carries the responsibility of upholding the high standards and consistent quality for which the bakery is known. Bakers at Levain bring their expertise and passion to the production of a diverse range of baked goods including breads, cakes, muffins, and signature cookies. This role requires a detail-oriented individual who can follow recipes precisely, manage baking processes, and maintain excellent sanitation and safety practices.
Ideal candidates for the Baker role possess strong communication skills, a team-oriented mindset, and an ability to remain calm and composed under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Adaptability, reliability, and a positive attitude are critical, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. Bakers at Levain are not only skilled technicians but also ambassadors who embody the company values by motivating their teammates and delivering a warm, professional presence.
Levain Bakery offers competitive hourly wages of $22 to $25, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package. This includes health, vision, and dental insurance, employer-funded healthcare reimbursement accounts, and supplemental benefits such as commuter benefits, employee assistance programs, and bike-share reimbursement. Additionally, the bakery provides 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave, one week of paid time off, and a 401(k) plan with a 3.5% company match.
This position requires a minimum of 1-2 years of baking experience, open availability to work various shifts including mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and the ability to lift and push up to 50 pounds. Bakers should be able to stand or walk for an 8-hour shift and possess valid DOH Certification along with any additional regional food handler certifications. Proficiency in English communication and basic computer skills are also necessary.
As an integral member of the Levain team, Bakers collaborate closely with colleagues to ensure smooth store operations and seamless customer experiences. They actively engage in maintaining inventory, following the first-in-first-out stocking method, monitoring quality control, and occasionally interacting with customers to answer questions about baked products. The role represents an exciting opportunity for passionate bakers to join a company committed to diversity, inclusivity, and fostering a supportive environment where unique perspectives are valued and encouraged.
