The role of a Baker at Giant Eagle is a key position within the bakery department, responsible for preparing and baking a variety of bakery items to ensure freshness and quality for customers. Operationally, the position involves several specific responsibilities such as managing proof boxes to ensure correct dough rise, properly frying donuts, rotating products for freshness, handling frozen goods, and preparing special orders with accuracy. The Baker assists in maintaining inventory efficiency by unloading deliveries and preparing baking ingredients for use. In addition, they support other team members and may assist in other areas as needed to maintain seamless bakery operations.
This position is suitable for candidates aged 18 and above who have completed either a job-specific skills assessment or have 6 to 12 months of related experience, including completion of an apprenticeship program like the Giant Eagle Apprenticeship. While a high school diploma is not required, prior bakery or related industry experience is desirable. The physical demands require the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, ensuring the capacity to handle supplies and ingredients associated with bakery work.

Job Duties
- perform bench work according to established scratch procedures when necessary
- prepare product and form product to specifications as required according to scratch recipes
- bake prepared product using appropriate time and temperature as specified by recipe
- prepare bakery products according to established recipes which include scratch recipes
- properly insert products into proof box, set controls, and close door to ensure proper size and shape of product
- prepare and fry donuts according to established procedures
- insert products into and retrieve products from the freezer to preserve freshness
- kindly answer questions and resolve problems to ensure guest requirements are met
- actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques and provide active sampling when appropriate
- provide exemplary customer service by greeting customers and ensuring they are able to locate the products they are looking for
- maintain safety as the top priority in all aspects of work
- bake prepared and scratch product for bakery cases and displays, rotating product and ensuring code dating procedures are followed
- maintain cleanliness of equipment, tables, utensils, floor to meet safety and sanitation regulations
- accurately record special orders on bakery products
- maintain proper safety and sanitation methods, emergency procedures, clean-ups, steritech, proper lifting and housekeeping
- understand all ingredients and purpose of each used in manufacturing scratch baked goods
- assist in maintaining bakery backroom, cooler and freezer efficiency by unloading deliveries
- assemble necessary baking ingredients to prepare for baking operation including all scratch recipes
- assist in other areas as required
