Job Description

The Statler Commissary, a part of the Campus Dining and Shops at a prominent university, is renowned for delivering quality food services and culinary excellence to the campus community. This establishment is deeply committed to not only providing delicious and fresh food but also maintaining a safe, clean, and hospitable environment for both its employees and customers. The bakery unit within the commissary specializes in producing a diverse range of baked goods that cater to the tastes and dietary needs of the university's population. As part of the university's operation, Statler Commissary upholds rigorous standards of food safety, sanitation, and customer service, making it a respected workplace for culinary professionals looking to develop their skills in a high-volume environment.

The Baker position at Statler Commissary is a full-time, probationary, union job offering a starting hourly wage of $19.48. This role is critical in maintaining the high-quality standards expected of the bakery products served to the university community. The baker will work primarily in the bakery section producing various baked goods including breads, pastries, cookies, and cakes in accordance with established recipes and safety guidelines. The position requires the ability to accurately follow recipes, handle dough at various stages, and operate industrial bakery equipment safely and efficiently. The baker is also responsible for decorating bakery items to meet both aesthetic and taste expectations.

This role is not only about baking but also about ensuring the production area is clean, organized, and compliant with safety and sanitation regulations. The baker will maintain ingredient inventories and production records, ensuring that the kitchen operates smoothly and efficiently. This job requires teamwork, communication, and dedication to excellence as it involves working with other staff members to meet production demands. Employees in this role must be prepared to manage mandatory overtime as stipulated in the union contract, with a typical schedule running Sunday through Thursday from 6 am to 2 pm. Given the university's operational calendar, employees may face layoffs during recess periods.

Working in a bustling kitchen environment exposes the baker to various physical demands including standing for up to 8 hours, lifting weights up to 50 pounds, and working amid heat, steam, and noise. Sound physical health, stamina, and attention to detail are essential for success in this role. The ideal candidate will demonstrate professionalism, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Bilingual skills are not required, but proficiency in English, both written and verbal, alongside accurate math skills, are a must.

Overall, this Baker position at Statler Commissary offers a rewarding opportunity for experienced bakers who wish to grow their careers in a dynamic university setting that values diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunities. Working under union guidelines, the role offers a structured and fair employment environment with benefits, a competitive salary, and an engaging work schedule. Candidates will be required to pass a Baker screening test and must possess reliable transportation and consistent attendance. This job is perfect for individuals passionate about the craft of baking who enjoy a challenging yet supportive kitchen atmosphere where quality and safety are prioritized.
