The Baker position at Au Bon Pain is pivotal in ensuring that every customer receives fresh and flavorful baked products each day. This role requires an individual who is self-directed, committed to quality, and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment starting early in the morning, typically between 3:00 am and 4:00 am. Bakers at Au Bon Pain are responsible for preparing a variety of bakery items including bread, pastries, and other baked goods. The position involves precise measuring and mixing of ingredients, managing production schedules in collaboration with management, and maintaining the bakery's cleanliness and sanitation.

Aside from baking duties, bakers also play an important role in product presentation and merchandising, ensuring that all items are attractively displayed and meet the company's standards. Teamwork and communication are essential elements of this role, as bakers work alongside café management, front-of-house staff, and fellow bakers to provide an outstanding customer experience. This is a non-exempt hourly position, ideal for those who have a passion for baking and a commitment to quality, safety, and sanitation standards. In addition to baking and product preparation, bakers assist in café setup, refill stations for coffee, tea, oatmeal, and soup, and perform various kitchen utility tasks as needed. An ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds is required due to the physical nature of the work. Job Qualifications

  • Previous baking experience preferred but not required

Job Duties

  • Measure and mix ingredients to produce bakery products including bread and pastries using precise café standards
  • Ensure correct quantities of baked goods are produced daily and collaborate with management on production schedules
  • Manage the baking environment by maintaining quality presentation, monitoring oven temperature and baking times, and evaluating product against standards
  • Visually merchandise and display all products attractively
  • Receive and store inventory, proof and prepare dough for baking, and bake to ensure product consistency
  • Keep work area clean, organized and stocked, responsible for proper sanitation of work environment
  • Demonstrate hospitality, respect and a friendly attitude toward guests and team members
  • Resolve problems promptly and keep management informed as issues arise
  • Provide on-the-job training for new bakers as needed
  • Perform prep and utility duties as needed and back up other roles when necessary
  • Assist in café setup and maintain additional stations for coffee, tea, oatmeal and soup
  • Execute other related responsibilities as assigned
