Job Description

Au Bon Pain is a well-established cafe operations company renowned for delivering high-quality baked goods alongside a clean, fast, and friendly cafe experience. Known for its dedication to fresh, delicious pastries and breads, Au Bon Pain operates with an early morning baker team that starts work between 3:00 am and 4:00 am to ensure guests enjoy freshly prepared products every day. The Baker position at Au Bon Pain is essential in maintaining the company's reputation for high-quality, fresh bakery products. This role involves preparing bakery items such as bread and pastries that meet the company's strict standards for taste, appearance, and freshness. The baker must be a self-motivated individual who values precision, efficiency, and cleanliness in a fast-paced café environment. This role reports to the General Manager, Manager, or Shift Supervisor and is categorized as a non-exempt hourly position. The baker's duties extend beyond baking to include aspects of product display, inventory management, sanitation, and guest interaction to create a positive café ambiance.

In this role, bakers are expected to manage production schedules collaboratively with management, ensuring the daily quantities of baked goods align with demand to minimize waste and maximize freshness. A key aspect of the job is monitoring and maintaining the quality of the baked products by controlling oven temperatures and baking times and visually assessing items against company standards. In addition to production tasks, bakers take responsibility for the cleanliness and organization of their work area, adhering to all safety and sanitation guidelines. They also play a critical role in merchandising baked items to attract customers and maintain brand standards.

Bakers at Au Bon Pain also contribute to the overall café operation by assisting with café setup, restocking coffee, tea, oatmeal, and soup stations, and sometimes assisting other team members when needed. Job Duties

  • Measure and mix ingredients to produce bakery products including bread, pastries etc. using precise café standards
  • Ensure correct quantities of baked goods are being produced daily and works with the management teams to plan production schedules
  • Manage the baking environment by maintaining quality presentation, monitor oven temperature and baking times, and evaluate product against standards
  • Visually merchandise and display all products
  • Receive and store inventory, proof/prepare for baking, and bake to ensure the consistency of product
  • Keep work area clean, organized and stocked, responsible for proper sanitation of the work environment
  • Demonstrate hospitality, respect and a friendly attitude toward Guests and fellow team members
  • Resolve any problem and keep management informed about issues and problems as they arise
  • Provide on-the-job training for new bakers (as needed)
  • Perform prep and utility duties as needed/backup when needed
  • Assist in café set up, refill and maintain additional areas
  • coffee/tea/oatmeal and soup as needed
  • Other related responsibilities as assigned
